Donald, from the sounds of it, your fuel vapor canister solenoid is failed and it is not venting your gas tank. That will cause a pressure to build up in the gas tank, triggering the gas pump to turn off. Common issue with cars with some age on them. In short, the charcoal canister back by the fuel tank has a solenoid that opens and vents the gas tank. The gas vapors get trapped in the canister so they do not polute the environment. i want to say the solenoid is like a $50 part and fairly easy to replace. The big thing is accessing it on the vapor canister.
