Burl Dash is Glazed Looking
Does anyone have any solutions for making the burl look clear. Parts of the dash are clear but there are some sections that are glazed looking.
The story (I cannot verify it) that I have heard is that around 2001 the guy responsible for the wood at Jaguar for decades retired, and they lost the 'formula' for a while. Lots of cars of that era have a finish that has taken on a milky cast. The only solution is to refinish or replace with new or used.
Two refinishers with good reputations are: http://www.britishautowood.com or http://www.maderaconcepts.com/.
You can also buy replacements here: XK8 and XKR Interiors.

Oh dear, I was hoping that there was a product you could use on them that would do the trick. It seems I've seen products for such but I didn't know if it would work on the dash or not. I guess it's worth a try if I can find one again. Thank you for all the good information.
If you have a USA 2001 model year Jaguar with "milky" wood, then the only way of fixing it is to remove the finish and redo it. A lot of the XK8/XJ8 models were effected & many wood sets were replace under warranty.
The type of finish used is a Polyester. This coating contains paraffin wax to aid it it's polishing. When the coating is applied, there is a certain "window" between coats, and to cut a long story short, too long and the wax does not rise to the surface of the coating & it can get trapped within the finish. The completed wood can go out the door looking great, but will come back milked-out in 6-12 months or so. I know, I've been through it myself, and around that same period also (Dec 2000). Cheers.
