Default 99 4.0 identification ?

Does anyone have a picture of the vin stamp location? I've done a thousand searches here and on google and read pages that say the stamp is located near the lifting point on the motor but I can't find mine at all and it's really clean so Not covered by dirt or anything. Just trying to figure out if my motor has been replaced or not. Thanks

Oh it's a 4.0 V8 in my 99 XJ

Look between the heads, down in the "v" towards the rear of the block.

Do you want the VIN stamp or the engine number???
The engine # on all my 4.0 V8 engines is on the left of the thermostat housing mount flange on the top of the block. It is a date code. Get a strong light and a can of spray cleaner. There is a metal tag for replacement engines on the bell housing area so check there also.

Mostly just trying to figure out if the motor has ever been replaced. I'm not having any problems just trying to get to know the car.

Thanks for your responses.

The motor S/N location changed from the AJ26 to the AJ27. Look for the S/N on an AJ26 by the tstat housing (as said) and on the block lower left side, back on an AJ27 (as said).

Based on the exhaust manifold and frame configuration among different models, the AJ27 can be difficult to read. On an XK8, for example, I have to read the number in two parts, but it can be had.
