Cool. I have no idea what that means except the LCD screen and I know what an SD card is. But still cool..lol

I'm an electronics person and I hadn't heard of an Arduino, it seems they have been around for many years. It's a small hobby type single chip computer board with interfaces to the outside world. It will need some toughening up to drive heavy inductive loads. I could draw the output stages in my 16CU if helpful but using more modern injector drivers would be better.

The Arduino is a way for hobbyists to get into microcontrollers... I've always been interested in learning how to program in C or something for a PIC or a AVR chip, but the Arduino is so intuitive (its basically a Atmel AVR from the ATmega line) with a chip for USB programming and pins so you can connect to the outside world...

R44 Chopper:

I'll add some pretty heavy filter caps to the inputs (well as heavy as I can) and I'll probably add removeable Opto-Isolators to them as well (so if one of them fries they are easily replaced)

I would like to see your Injector stage (if you remember it) but i have had a quick look around and found the LM1949 which looks like a really simple injector driver

Here is a picture of my current wire hell testing the LCD and SD card reader (Its about 1.14 MB and its size is 3264 x 1952 so be warned, its a pretty big picture)

Default Also interested...

hello Agilly1989, and others, I googled XJ6 and Jaguar ECU and found this forum. My interest lies in getting a 1979 XJ6 S3 up to modern emission standards. The reason for this is that I have a Cobra replica in the workshop which has an XJ6 engine. I live in Germany, so being Europe, the regulations stipulate for new registrations the vehicle must fulfill the latest specifications. Although my engine works perfectly well, and really runs sweetly, I am fairly sure that it will not pass any emissions tests. I am interested to know what Agilly1989 is hoping to implement. For instance for my requirements I would need a Lambdasond (oxygen sensor) input to regulate mixture for 3 way catalysts, I would like to see a more modern cold start implementation, to do away with the bi-metal injector, I would like to know if a pressure sensor can be implemented to compensate for the airflow accuracy problems at higher altitudes. Obviously my interests are different from real jag owners, in that i have no problems ripping the loom out and wiring each injector separately, my loom is modified in any case because the Jag was a much larger car than my kit. One comment interested me, it was stated earlier that wiring the injectors separately would not achieve anything much for a stock road car, I was wondering on what basis such a comment was made. I am not pro or contra separate injector wiring, I don't know enough about it to make comment. The problems with separate injector wiring don't end with the loom wiring of course, because to effectively fire off the injector which is drawing mixture in, you need to know what position the engine is at, which presently is not available on the jag XJ engines, so a TDC sensor, or rotation sensor would need to be adapted, so that the correct injector can be fired. (if a TDC sensor was implemented, a simple counter could be use to count the points opening, and would simply count to 6 and then synchronize with the sensor). I hope that some good comes from Agilly1989s work, I don't know enough about the details of engine management to be able to assist very much, I do have electronics knowledge, but probably no more than others here, so for the moment I'll just sit back and enjoy the show, unless there is something specific where I can help out.
Best regards

Domo

Domo

I'm hoping to implement the basics of the original 5cu that has lambda feedback.. so just basic injector pulse length adjustment... I have had thoughts of adding a air pressure sensor to it, but I'm not entirely sure if my controller can handle all the inputs at the same time (so altitude sensing may be in the v2 model)... I havn't thought of using a modern cold start method because of the way I'm planning to make the Ecu.. I'm thinking of making it compatible with the heated lambda sensors, plus the circuitry will allow bigger (or smaller) injectors without much change

Domo... What do you want your Ecu to do? Because your making a kit-car with the xj motor...

To everyone...
I'm currently in hospital because of my condition, I'm not sure how long I will be in here BUT I can still reply and answer your questions to the best of my abilities

In the hospital? I don't imagine they allow you to use a soldering iron in there..lol
Hope you feel better soon!

I am really enthusiatic about your project, mostly beacuse I was doing the same stuff but at a much older age than you, if 1989 is a clue! To the detrators who say that it has all been done before, well of course it has otherwise the cars wouldn't be running now would they? There is always room for innovative ideas, albeit non commercial ones, sorry. This is a fantatic learning excercise, the electronics available today compared with the 1980's are incomparable.

Thanks R44chopper... I also know that Jamey and Domo are also interested in the project and have supplied some great information and ideas and I thank you all for your great support

After 4 and a bit days in hospital I finally get some answers... They would prefer to operate and remove the crohns... I'm guessing recovery time, 6 to 10 weeks... So plenty of time to test stuff (only if the recovery is at home)

Well I'll say a prayer that it goes quick, easy and as painless as possible!

Im going to do as much work on the ECU as I can but I dont know how much i can do :/

So how ya feeling?
You know I was thinking, maybe all this is because you live in Australia? I mean, being upside-down all the time can't be good for the digestive system...

OK guys... Good and bad news.. Gonna put the WHOLE project on hold for a month or two because of a few things...
1. Not enough money
2. Surgery coming up
3. NEW Arduino Platforms are coming out, including one that has a 32bit ARM Cortex (Basically one of the more powerful Atmel AVR chips)

This new chip has a WHOLE LOT of inputs and outputs, it runs at 96MHz (compared to the 16MHz the ATmega328 runs at) so I could technically run everything like Sequental Injection, Programmable Ignition, Multiple Sensors, Digital Temp Sensors, Relay control... The options are endless... It has built-in USB support so I could have windows software for it... External EEPROM (so there is no need for the SD Card)... there is SO MUCH I could do with it

SO guys... I have a BIG QUESTION for you....

IF your Jag could have any feature on it you wanted, what would you have? Use that imagination of yours, Look at modern cars and see what they have

I do know that I'm veering away from my basic ECU (Which I will still keep working on) But ill also work on this much more powerful version (which I think may cost a little more than the basic one, I haven't priced parts yet) that can be put in the engine bay or in the cabin (kinda megasquirt-ish but cheaper I hope)

One thing I think would be nice is an adjustable mode for economy, and performance!

Instead of selecting modes a throttle position sensor could be utilised and it could automatically change the modes due to how fast you press the throttle... or a manifold pressure sensor which will change maps if the manifold pressure drops too low or something....

But if you would prefer a switch or something more manual that could also be implemented

Hmmm...never thought of it adjusting automatically...good idea! Saves the trouble of adding a switch in the cockpit!
