Custom Jaguar L-Jetronic 5CU ECU

The project is kinda at a stand-still at the moment, waiting for parts to come through, waiting for pay-day...
So I'm on research duty...... Looking at the workings of the 6CU/16CU the 8CU, 4CU etc (SO MANY VARIANTS) and seeing what alterations are needed to my existing project (the 5CU) to be able to support the other ones

Just Looking at the various V12 ECUs, comparing plug pinouts, and they seem similar (minus a few pins)... so I might be able to make a universal board for the 6CU,16CU,26CU AND the 36CU...
You just open the ECU up and change some jumpers for your specific ECU...
Trip computer output might be a problem though because I dont know how that interfaces with the ECU... I've never had much to do with the trip computer... My jag dosen't have one (being pre-ECU) and my dads Jag dosent have a trip computer either
And I know your interested JameyXJ6... Im just curious on how many others are interested as well
Ive also decided to keep all updates here... not many people are looking at my blog so there is no need to keep it running

I think your right Jamey, but if people still wish to use their trip computer with my ECU ill have to get the right output so they can still use their trip computer...
Plus if you havn't noticed, I put nearly all the information I could in my first post on this thread, going into a little bit of detail of various things

That's ok... My dad can't follow it as well... I still like to explain things for those who are interested
I've decided to make the 12 cylinder version as well... I'll bench test it (because I don't have a V12)... But when its made, and after I bench test it, would you like to see how it goes in your car Jamey?

HI, agilly, having read your 1st post, i have some questions!
say a person has a perfectly running Jaguar, why would he buy an other ECU?
and do you believe that you can improve on the factory ECU,if engine is stock as from factory!
what can be accomplished, better fuel mileage, i doubt it.
or more power! again factory has spent millions on R&D for both!
what i'm saying is, where would efficency be improved?
OK that said if the engine becomes MODIFIED, like race type cams, more compreission, improved inlet & exhaust flows!
then one should go to a better EMS,engine management system,
BUT,and a big one, after spending thousands of money on mods, it stands to reason that he would also spend money on tried and true computor systems.
many of these systems are available, in all kinds of configurations.
here is pix of my SDS system, been since 1994, and upgraded in 2001, to much higher resolution, & power.
fully adjustable and does most all what 1st post said.
when i bought it cost was $600. USD.
what i'm asking ,how would your unit help a stock Jaguar? that runs perfectly well!
and above all ,do continue with your work, you just might reinvent the wheel!! Ron

Thanks for the questions ronbros
I'll answer your questions and provide explanations
1. If the person has a PERFECTLY running jaguar.. there is no need to buy another ECU... but most of the people I know in person dont have a perfectly running jaguar and are looking for ways to better their fuel consumption
2. I do believe that my ECU could provide an improvement in fuel mileage.. it might not be much, but my dad is trying to achieve 25mpg, he has gotten to 22.5 (on average) so if i can get the increase of 2.5mpg out of it by using my ECU... I have achieved what i was planning to do... It may not be much, but its better than nothing
3. Efficiency should be improved when i finish my 2 other add-ons... but that's ONLY if the ECU works... This ECU is only 1 Part of my bigger project.. An Engine "Modernization" if you would like to call it....
This "Modernization" will be 3 parts... The ECU, A Sequential Injection Add-On and a Programmable Ignition Add On...
Most modern fuel injection cars have these things (they may not be programmable or sequential) but if you look at a really modern car, they dont have a distributor, they don't have a Mass Air Flow sensor...
Yes, this is basically a Megasquirt, or any other aftermarket ECU, But they are focused on being universal... My plan is it use what is already existing in the jaguars harnesses so there is little to no re-wiring to do
I do agree, if someone puts racing cams or mods the engine, go ahead and buy a tried and tested ECU, it'll probably work ALOT better than mine, and if your happy with your SDS system, I'm glad you have found something that works... but in the long run... you still replaced the ECU.. and did you get better fuel mileage or performance out of it? Did you have to perform any extra wiring to get it to work?
I honestly dont know how well my ECU will perform ronbros... But this is just a project... if it works, it works

Agilly,, something i'v noticed on old jaguars, is the engine wiring harnesses etc.
have wire cracking and breaking up , bad grounds etc. all heat and time related.
if you were to sell an ECU you would be sure to tell buyer about potential problems with old wiring, that seem to be a big trouble area, so as the buyer would be aware of such!
good luck with your project!

Thanks ron... I didnt think of that
Since the ECU is going to be much smaller in PCB size than the original... maybe it can be mounted in the engine bay or in the dash somewhere.... I would like to stay with my original plan though, but I might offer a "Engine Bay" version (more heat resistant parts, etc) so less re-wiring has to be done

If you're planning on using the existing plug, the majority of the harness is protected in the trunk and hidden inside the sill. It isn't until it exits the fender into the engine compartment that trouble starts.
This could be tackled 2 ways. Either use the existing plug (which would be simplest for most applications) Or create a splice and plug for the underhood mounting of the ECU.
The second option would require some patience for the installer. If the wires haven't been repaired/replaced then it's just a matter of knowing which wires to identify for splicing and then include instructions with a replacement plug.
