If I Were A Mod....
The power can be tempting at times...
j/k, but it is nice to know it is there when those few bad apples get out of hand.
I was thinking about instituting a 'Member Spotlight' thread where once a month, we would ask a series of personal questions, in order to better understand and put a personal spin on a selected, highly-active member. Of course, since it was my idea, i'd organize and coordinate all that is needed.
Any other ideas...if you were a mod?

How about we start with Admin and the Mods.
Yup it would sure be a spin, but one heck of a typo.
Along the lines of instructions to an ER surgeon:
In the event of injury to this area don't just lop it off.
Becoming,
In the event of injury to this area do just lop it off.
Owch!!
So me thinks you should start your spotlight thread.

Yes I think Caddie is a good candidate, I'd like to know more about him.
We could set up 10 standard questions they could answer.
For example -
1) Where born & grew up
2) Where do they live now
3) What do they do for a living
4) Family background
5) When did they get their first Jaguar and why
etc....
Cant think of any more. Im sure you will do a good job h20boy.

Thanks, Translator...her name escaped me.
I second (or third, or fourth, or whichever motion it's up to now) that emotion about Caddy.

Another thing...I was perusing the members list, and noticed that there are a LOT (and I do mean A LOT)) of "members" who have yet to post even once.
On one of the boards that I am an admin on, I go through once a month, and anyone who hasn't made any posts since signing up gets their account deleted. I generally make sure they've been a "member" for over 30 days, unless the email/membername is just too ridiculous to be real (in my opinion).
Yes, it takes a while, but it sure makes room on the database for people who really want to know stuff.
Statistics:
30,004 members on 765 pages in the member's list (according to the number at the bottom of the front page)
22,933 members according to the member's list
If we go by the second number, there are 557 FULL pages and one partial page of people have not made any posts...that totals up to 16724 people who have not made a post.
There are roughly 2,000 members who have only made 1 post (yes, this includes anyone who has registered over the last few days and actually made a post).
If it were me, I'd go in and check when each of the people who have no posts signed up, and if they signed up over, say, 6 months ago, delete that account. Make room for someone who actually wants to participate, and make a lighter load on the database server...it would also take up less space when creating backups of the db. I might also do that with people who only have 1 or 2 posts as well. If they haven't logged in for over 6 months, delete them.
My 2 cents.

Hey Momo....re the pruning of the database, sumthin I've been meaning to get round to for a while now
Anyways, in progress as we speak.
I'l be looking to delete all those with posts of minimal amounts as well as those that havent logged in for a year.
Basically, looking at as many options as possible to lighten the load and make the experience the best possible for all those members who wish to participate and use the site.
I'll be doing my best although I still seem to have limited acess at times.
All the best guys
Jim

Hey MM....thanks for the kind words.
As for the database? I spent a few hours last night and removed all banned members, members with zero post count / post count less than 10 and OR not been active for at least a year or so.
This has reduced the numbers by around 7000
I've still not got great connection and certain issues still remain, but I'm back on the case and hopefully we can start moving forward again.
For anyone who has forwarded me FAQ's to issue I'll be getting round to this hopefully in the next several days, so please bear with me, and then all being well normal service will be resumed.
Thanks
Perhaps a monthly "newsletter" type thing? Simply high-lighting new topics, or topics that have received a lot of replies & input? I'd be willing to pen something up the first of every month (starting Jan 1, 2010). The start of a new year...the start of something new for the forums.
Anyone? Hello? Bueller?
Anyone? Hello? Bueller?

Hey MM...just read your post

Sounds like a great idea that we could easily apply. Why not put something together to give me a flavour of what you'd like to put out and I can have a look at it?
I'd suggest that it be short and to the point, with perhaps 2 or 3 links to the site.
Look forward to hearing from you......
Nice one
