I live near London in the UK and I've recently purchased a 1966 mk10 4.2 to add to a small collection of classic cars and tractor - and have a few issues I'm trying to resolve. The car is very nice however it's been stood a while so gentle recommissioning is required.

One of the early issues upon looking around the car properly - the boot (or trunk) will not stay open - can anyone advice whether there's adjustment of the hinges / spring (?)

I see nobody has replied, and I suspect this is due to there being so few of these cars left now. I suspect the mechanism is the same or similar to that on the S-type and 420 saloon. As far as I know there is no adjustment, so something may have become detached or has broken. I'm afraid your best bet is to put on your overalls, prop up the boot lid and clamber in the boot with a torch to look and see what the problem may be.

 

I had the same problem on the 420G I bought about 10 years ago. It's a very heavy boot as I found out when it fell on me while I was working on the fuel tanks!!! I temporarily stopped that from happening again with a cut-down broom handle.
The boot is held open by two torsion springs fitted to the boot lid that are bolted to brackets within the boot space. My problem was due to a broken frame on the nearside spring. I got a replacement from a local wreaker and that fixed the issue after installing and tensioning it up.

 

The boot lid hinges rest on a longitudinal spring that runs under the rear deck between the two hinges. As the boot lid opens it presses against a u shape in the spring at the hinges adding torque and keeping the lid open. Make sure this spring is properly seated and is secured to the frame.
