Hi folks - new here, so...... Please bear with me if this has been answered before.

Have seen a post about auto choke problems for 3.8, but my car is a late model 340. The garage I use are trying to get her sorted - and the only thing at the moment that's causing an issue is the auto choke.

Any idea how it should be wired/cabled - colour of cables - including the cable to the otter switch would be a great help. I can't find any images on either the web or in the usual books of the detail of the choke.

Thanks

Stuart

I have a '65 S type with an Auxiliary Starting Carb, (ASC), or as you call it "auto-choke".

usually the otter wire is in the same fabric-covered harness as the Coil wires which includes the 1 wire going to the distributor;

in my S type the wire to the otter switch is green, covered with a black vinyl sleeve; unfortunately it is the same color as the Dash Temp Gauge Sender. Easy to get them wrong if you have lost the black vinyl sleeve. However, the otter switch wire has a "L" shaped spade connector while the Temp sender wire would have a straight spade connector.

see if the images below are what you have, otherwise I haven't seen a 340 "auto-choke".

Fantastic Jose - thanks. I will see how far I advance the problem tomorrow! Have a new wiring loom, the otter switch isn't in quite the same place on the 340 engine, and it looked like the only available wire - as you say, in with the coil cables - was too tight - together with the fact that for some reason, my otter had two connections! I'll give it a go with your information and hopefully she will switch on and off as she is meant to!

Regards

you welcome! I take it you have the same Auxiliary Starting Carb? if yes, then there is a way to make them come on and off manually, as opposed to depending on the otter switch; you connect a toggle switch somewhere convenient under the dash to manually turn it on and off. The ASC/otter switch combo is very unreliable and the ASC has a tendency to spit fuel on people's faces when one is near them.

the instructions are at JagLovers in the Saloon Lovers section. Written for the S type, but applicable to other models with the same ASC. Frankly, I would prefer a manual, cable choke, as my MG-B had, it would start the engine inmediately. The funny thing is that my S type has an existing factory bracket for a choke cable....go figure.
