Default Annoying Fuel Filter Gasket Problem

As you can see by the photo, the gasket is too small for the glass bowl, it just climbs into itself when it's tightened up.
The part number form XK's is CO28080 or C28080 from David Manners.

Has anyone come across this problem ?
I'm thinking that mine has the brass filter in it and not the paper element type, but it should be the paper type being a very late 1968 340.
I'm tired of making my own gaskets and here we are again...

my '65 has the brass mesh seal, no rubber seal. It's the same mesh filter used at the engine breather.

get a large thin brass washer at a hardware store and add the paper filter., or make your own washer from a tin can or aluminum soda can, it's the right thickness.

or apply a bead of Hylomar on the top edge of the glass bowl, allow to dry, then try it.

The paper filters that you often see in the glass reservoir were never supplied by Jaguar, nor were any mesh filters visible within the reservoir itself AFIK - they just relied on having impurities settle at the bottom of the glass bowl. My 1966 car is entirely original in that respect and it runs fine (but I have installed a pre-pump filter).

While the paper filters were not supplied by Jaguar they did supply a filter (still not sure what it was made of) via a tech bulletin in 1968. In the bulletin they offered that retrofit was permitted if not suggesting it was desired. The issue with the screen is all is trapped on top of the screen. With the proper filter the crud goes to the bottom of the bowl. filters with a spring on the bottom are for V12 cats and are not proper as those filter in the wrong direction. Here is an original 1968 on filter.

since these filtering gizmos (the ones with the glass bowl), are such a pain every way you look at it, couldn't we eliminate it and the two banjo adapters and install a XJ-6 Bosch filter in its place?

XK's got back to me, they said the filter had a defective gasket in it... OK....

I'm betting the new replacement will be wrong too.

Yes Jose, it would be very easy just to eliminate the silly sediment bowl all together, but then I like it there _ and it's original.

It would be much easier just to put an after market inline filter in.
One of those see through plastic ones.

I'm thinking about it, reliability to me is more important than 1960's originality when it comes to things like this.

the darned bowl is a pain in the behind, pretty, but obsolete.

Jose not sure what the pain is. The filters are about $3 each but rarely changed. Norrmal maintenance is to remove the bowl and clean the bowl. The one thing that can not be disputed is that you get a clear indication of the situation in your fuel tank from the glass bowls.

They are a bit of a pain in the fact that the seal likes to leak when it's disturbed.
So I have to make a new gasket each time.

In Canada I have to send to the states or the UK just for the special filter and seal.

A part that should be only a couple of bucks ends up costing 15 or more.

Jeff if you check your local parts store these filters fit many makes of old tractors and equipment. If you say what brand of parts stores you have I will try to provide an interchange. I buy them by the dozen and it works out to a bit over $3 each.

Lordco and Bumper to Bumper.
Lordco is the biggest chain.

If you could give me the name of the tractors, or what else it fits, it would give a me a place to look, I don't mind doing my own research, however I need a place to begin.
That would be much appreciated.

If you buy them by the dozen, what are the part numbers, Lordco is a stickler for that ?

Tried to navigate the Lordco site--sort of a challenge. Anyway use AC Delco number GF 124--seems to be the universal number now. Amazon Canada has it but for $10. In the Us they are about $6 if you want one. Hopefully someone at Lordco can help you as AC Delco is one of their vendors. B to B was about as difficult to navigate. Good luck!

George, the pain is getting the bowl to not leak.

Mine has a brass mesh thing at the top which sits on top of the bowl, similar to the engine breather filter, if not the same. A total pain to get it to seal properly.

Jose the brass mesh filter should be locket to the top of the filter housing. It should not be free.

as far as I know, it sits at the top of the glass bowl, then it is pressed to the bottom of the metal housing by the bowl, then the sliding "pendulum" slides under the bowl and you tighten the thumb nut. Correct?

Jeff that looks very much like the orig. ones but they were not brass--as I said before I am not sure what they were made of.

Jose if the screen is loose that would be a pain. The screen should be seated (firmly) on the output tube of the filter housing. In fact you remove them when you convert to a filter and they are tough to remove. If you are fighting the screen and seal I bet it is a pain!

I realize the originals weren't brass, but the new one is.
They're made up of tiny pellets.

Follow George's advice, the ac filter is in every parts store from tractors to 1957 chevys....
You have to push the gasket up into the housing!
I change mine every year for 30 years....
Under 3 dollars, fram, ac and other suppliers as well.
Good luck.
GTJOEY1314
THE OLD STONE THING IS A WASTE......
DOUBLE P.S. With the more modern ac filter if you call it that , when you push it up the tube it locks the gasket up top!
TRIPLE P.S. THE FILTER IN THE FIRST THREAD IS THE REPRO JUNK WITH A SPRING, THEY COLLAPSE AND RESTRICT GAS FLOW.......NO GOOD
