Default Boss Kit for a Daimler 250 V8/ Mk II Jag

Now I’ve got the EZ Steer power steering kit fitted, the original massive Tiller on my 250 V8 feels, & looks, a bit redundant. I’ve bought a nice wooden sports wheel, which will look very classy. But I’m having trouble sourcing a Boss Kit to make it fit my steering column. I know plenty of members have fitted aftermarket steering wheels to their Daimler’s & Mk IIs. So where did you get your Boss Kit from?

I Bought a lovely Astrali Wheel but they could not supply a Boss for it ! I manged to get one from Motolita

Boss kits's available direct from Moto Lita or the likes of Barratts. If you have a Nardi pattern wheel they can provide all the mounting hardware.

As Gary and I are in Australia I emailed him direct with a suggestion for boss kits available in Australia. Saas brand have wheels and boss kits.

Has anyone tried to fit a 1950s/60s horn button to one of these? They are nicely made, but, in a Mk2, too much black plastic, too big a piece of aluminium for me.

unfortunately, ALL Hub / Horn push kit manufacturers today are supplying a very cheap center emblem the size of a US quarter coin. Doesn't get any cheaper than that.

In the 1980's and up to 1991 MOMO supplied Leaper and Growler emblems of silver-dollar coin size, somewhat similar in size to the original Jaguar center horn-push emblems with every steering wheel.. Very high quality. But that ended when Ford started to threaten aftermarket manufacturers in 1992 with legal action if they used Jaguar logos in any product.

when I fitted a MOMO 15" inch steering wheel to my XJ-6, it came with 3 emblems, a yellow MOMO logo emblem, a black and gold Jaguar Growler emblem, and a black and silver Jaguar LEAPER emblem. Since the XJ uses mostly a Leaper emblem, I used that one for the horn push.

when I fitted a TOURIST TROPHY 15" inch steering wheel to my S type, I modified the horn push assembly to accept the larger MOMO Growler emblem. Those Tourist Trophy wheels and hubs are sold by Moss Motors in Goleta California. They are very high quality wheels. Made in China, available finished in both leather and wood. Thick or slim grip.

So to answer Peter's question, yes, you can modify the currently available horn push assembly to accept a 1960's center emblem, whether Jaguar or Daimler.

Thanks, Jose. The one in the S type really looks the part. My wife bought me a Mota-Lita years ago at a car show (at a very good price). It's excellent except the horn button is the quarter size leaper on a big expanse of black plastic. All wrong era for a Mk2. You've inspired me to be creative and look wider!

you welcome. In the below picture, you can see the yellow MOMO logo horn push. I am going to take it to Saul at British Autowood to have it laminated in wood with a growler emblem. Saul is an artista with these emblems. He already did the center ring where the hex bolts are, and the finish is like glass.

There are some really nice custom horn pushes around if you are prepared to take the trouble. I'm not a lover of Derrington wheels but this is a great job. Wood rim by British Autowood.

This is mine in my S Type. I bought the steering wheel new at a classic car show for about £30 and found the moto lita boss secondhand on Ebay with the growler for £10. It is a 15 inch wheel as I found the standard 17 inch Jaguar steering wheel too big for the power steering. Ok if you have a non power steering car but the 15 inch wheel just gave me back a bit of feeling in the steering that I was lacking with the bigger wheel.
The vendor had several 15 inch wheels with different coloured woods and allowed me to take several over to the car to pick the closest match to my walnut interior. Well worth the money and is always commented on at car shows.

I've got the boss but I have to make a decision on my horn push for my Italian job. One of 4 made. Shallow dish 15"

My present plan is to modify my Mota-Lita plastic centre to accept either the badge or complete push from the late 1950s cars, XK150 etc. Since it's not clear how I can do it, I'll look out for a decent secondhand button. Strangely, scruffy ones on eBay fetch more than new from SNG. It may have to wait till the next spares day ...

Yes ~ with the Derrington above the chap turned & polished the surround himself. I don't know where he got the Growler centre push from. It's larger than the Mk2/S Type item. He did a darn good job.

now your asking. I think it had a backing paper on it which I peeled off and just applied it to the screen. Some come with a sticky side and others are like the old Tax disc holder that you had to wet the back to get it to stick but they were always drying out and falling off. I am fairly sure mine was a sticky one.

The original early 60s ones were sticky back 'paper.' I've put paper in quotes as it was a fairly durable material, not something that would dry out or fade after a few months in the sun. I remember it as, back in the late 60s or early 70s, my mother, in her infinite wisdom, decided that, as the car was certainly 'run in', she'd generously do my father the favour of removing the stickers. This resulted in a mess on the windscreen that took a lot of cleaning and caused much regret for my father and myself at the loss of the decal. Somewhere in my pile of spares and bits, I think that I have a replacement.

I have a reproduction sticky one. Some put them on with soapy water & some just stick them on carefully & progressively to ensure no air bubbles. Wet application allows you to use a credit card or similar to work out bubbles.

this is British Autowood's version of the Derrington steering wheel with a E type horn push. Measures 16" diameter.

needs to be reinforced at the hub where the bolts go around the center.

I got mine on Ebay for around $150 complete and for horns, here in the US there are more idiots so I went extreme as I seem to do and found that the Wolo direct driven train horn works great if you ditch the electric compressor and add a quality air compressor rated for 100% duty with a slim motorcycle air ride tank and then it wakes up the horn to sound similar to a more authentic train horn when leaving the horn depressed for more than a few seconds and with a quick tap it is just a much louder horn that works without going crazy loud. That has prevented idiots that would have potentially hit me in rush hour traffic, etc.
