Conversion to Serpentine belt
I had A/C installed to my '61 Mark II. A slight larger aluminum radiator was added
as well as a pusher electric fan hopefully to handle the extra heat generated. All works well except that sitting in traffic the car gets hot too easily. There is no room to put in the mechanical pull fan since three belts are required (P/S, alternator & water pump and A/C compressor) so the crank pulley sticks out by one and half inch more!
I was thinking of using the old set of having the alternator & P/S pump combined to one pulley
thus I can shave off one pulley slot but it is not cost effective.
I am thinking of converting to use Serpentine belt similar on the XJ6 engine (1998 - )
Have this been done to an early XK engine? Does anyone has an XJ6 picture w/ the serpentine
belt setup?
Please help and thanks in advance.

RE: Conversion to Serpetine belt
I have seenan aluminumcrank pulley with serpentine belt adapted to MK-II and S type, but not the XJ-6 pulley. Mine is a 1965 S type. However, my 1984 XJ-6 does not have such a serpentine pulley, so you might be referring to a more modern XJ-40 ??
And, are you saying thatduring stop-n-go traffic, the Pusher Electric Fan in your car, cannot keep up ?
Talk to Rock Browning at Mr. Jaguar/Retro Air www.mrjaguar.comand see what he says; He works with MK-II, S type, and 420 retrofit air conditioners.
Also, I have been hearing that adding a "splash panel" under the front of the car, (same as in the 1980-1987 XJ-6), improves the temp. situation in these old Saloons.
let us know what you do. I'm interested myself.

RE: Conversion to Serpetine belt
I think its the modern XJ-40. I prefer to keep my mods to Jag parts as much as I can (crank & P/S pulleys).
I also talked to Rock. His set up is for LHD cars. Mine is RHD. He uses one V belt but the alt & P/S has to be one combo unit.
I found a custom shop ASP Racing (Houston) that might be willing to this. Either I have to send my engine to him to find a old one to use as a jig.
Adding a splash panel? Do you have any pics?
Plz forward me infos on the car w/ the serpentine aluminum crank pulley.

I don't have pics of the splash panel - this was beingtalked aboutas a "theory"to curethe overheating in the MK-II. You would have to look at a splash panel in a Series 3 XJ-6 to understand what it entails, it's a flat panel covering the open area under the radiator and up to the front member. My S type does not have a splash panel but it doesn't overheat, even in stop-n-go traffic. (but I don't have A/C).
Pulley: I recall another company, but they are in the UK, and they manufacture the custom serpentine belt pulleys. I'll keep looking for them.

RE: Conversion to Serpetine belt
Classic Jaguar doesn't have pulleys for serpentine belts, only for double V belts. They recommended me to Rob Beere in England (They are well known) which may have the serpentine pulley setup. I couldn't find any from Rob Beere website. Will call them.
I understand about splash panel setup. I might do this later thou.

RE: Conversion to Serpetine belt
Rob Beere got the crank & water serpentine pulleys (5 grooves). I need to get P/S pulley custom made. I found a source in Houston TX for this.
For the alt, I use Range Rover type (it was posted on the net about conversion) so it's not so hard to find a pulley for that. As for the A/C compressor, I would need to find some shop that can convert over or buy a new one.
I need a shop or someone to help me w/ the engineering on how to route the belts and incorporate the idler pulleys. Gates have an automotive division that dedicated to this but not sure if they even consider a small fish like me.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your help so far ....

RE: Conversion to Serpetine belt
glad to be able to help, though I'm not always able to...
great news about the pulley! For consultation and advice, I know a Jaguar technician who might help. He has 30 years experience and recently broke the land-speed record in Daytona with his Purple E-type, a car which he built.
Call Tom Curren at (407) 298-1358. his shop is called Coventry Classics in Orlando, Florida. Heworks with MK-II, S type, 420, and all other Jags. I plan to have himwork in my 3.8 engine in the future. I think hecan help you with the belt routing and other issues.

I did not call him but found his website ... but nothing. "All Jaguar parts have been liquidated" Is he still in biz?

RE: Conversion to Serpetine belt
I don't think that's Tom's website, and as far as I know he doesn't have one. Yes, he's still in biz, I just spoke to him a week ago. He has a shop in Orlando, full of Jaguar engines and transmissions stacked to the ceiling in giant racks. I remember that CCC website, they showed a list of classic parts, and you had to request a "quote" by e-mail, and then they never replied. Definitely not Tom's style. Give him a call.

Some MKIIs had A/C dealer installed. I picked on out of a breaker's yard with the condenser in boot. Compressor was mounted vertical and low. Seems the PO did not use antifreeze and car was scrapped because of freeze break on block. I am planning on restoring condenser and using in MKI with the new style compressor that is small an electric powered.

If you can find someone whom will fabricate it I think that is your best bet. Expect to pay some money but keep in mind serpentine belt set ups once they are engineered often sell of about $1800 or more that come with the power steering pump and AC compressors. Even my resto-mod 3.8s with a GM v-8 had to require a serpentine belt set up which was about $1800 and came with billet brackets/pulley's and chrome power steering, alternator, and power steering pump. Thus don't freak out if the custom work is expensive. I am using electric fans to push and pull through a Wizard custom radiator and with the AC on a hot day everything is running cool.
