Default Earth strap

Hi Chaps,

I have a Mk2 1962 3.8 Auto Positive earth and I am having a few teething problems.
So can anyone tell me where the earthing strap/cable is situated? I mean the one that connects the body to the engine as I cant find it............yet

If you're facing the car looking at the grill.
It's on your right front engine mount.
Underneath the generator...

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your reply. I have taken a look and all I can see is the lead from the generator that disappears into the wing.

Am I looking in the wrong place ??

Best regards

in my 1965 S type there is no separate Earth/Ground Strap, one battery cable is connected to the body whether Pos. or Neg Ground.

Have a look at the picture in post #4.
That engine mount is underneath the generator which makes the cable hard to see.
I don't know if that cable is original, but it is definitely a grounding cable running from the block to the body.

@ Jose: Hmmm, there has to be some sort of cable somewhere on your S Type to ground the block, otherwise how would the starter crank ?
With out the cable wouldn't the rubber engine mounts isolate the block from the positive/negative side of the battery ?

you are correct JeffR1, the S type DOES have a Earth Strap, so I stand corrected, I've just never seen it either.

reading my service manual engine removal instructions it states as follows:

"DISCONNECT THE EARTH STRAP FROM BODY AT REAR OF INLET MANIFOLD".

Re-reading that post reminds me - does anyone know where I might order a new ground strap? Currently it's still the same 'temporary' fix I made at the time to re-clamp the strap in the bracket - it works OK but I'd like to replace with a properly clamped part.

cheers,

B

Thanks Jose - typically I did a search for 'ground strap' when I originally looked and so didn't find it...

Ordered! I hope you find the source of the problem Hartford.

that's because the English call it "Earth strap". not "Ground strap" as in the US.

FYI, the XJ-6 has a real nice stainless steel ground strap from the chassis to engine, and another one from the radio to the transmission tunnel.
