Suggested I put up some photos of the engine compartment. I've included a time line in photos of the work I've been doing over the last year and a half.
Engine removed and sad state of compartment. As can be seen on the battery tray. A battery exploded burning several holes in the firewall and then repaired with Bondo.
A lot of work to be done!
Engine back from machine shop with new pistons, bearings freeze plugs and head studs.
Firewall repaired
Rebuild head back on.
Ready for paint
Primer coat
Three coats of single stage Cream Paint
Engine and Trans ready to go in. Acid stains from the battery exploding can be seen on the bell housing.
Engine compartment awaiting engine!
Voila!
I have video of the first start but having trouble uploading it. It's an mov file but for some reason it won't upload!
It's been a lot of fun and frustration working on this car. More fun than frustration.
Video can be downloaded below.

Wow what inspiration for us. Love the detail and quality of the work.
As I am new to the MK2/S Class, is the tranny the later all synchro with the short OD unit.
I have the Moss box with longer OD. Everything works but the box is tired and is need of a rebuild. Would love to replace with a 5 speed (lots of $$$) or the later synchro/OD unit but they are impossible to find it seems.
Moss boxes are out there but their condition probably not any better than mine.
