Engines and Transmission mk2
hello! I am working on removing the engine from a 1963 mk2, my group and I are having a bit of trouble. We have scoured the manual but could not find a way to completely separate the engine from the transmission. Hope to hear from someone soon!
It is better to remove the trans and engine as a unit because if you don't, you risk bending the input shaft on the transmission. That's the part that fits into the end of the crank shaft.
To do it your way you must fully support the trans and the engine. There is no secret here, once both units are supported first disconnect the engine stabilized at the back of the engine where it bolts onto the firewall, undue all the bolts on the bell housing a little at a time until they are totally loose. There should be no indication of them binding, if there is adjust your engine hoist and/or transmission jack so the bell housing bolts can be turned by hand.
This procedure also assumes you have the exhaust and intake manifolds removed from the car, as well as anything that the engine might get hung up on.
The removal of the rad, fan pulleys etc. will be necessary (I would think) so the engine can move forward enough to come away from the trans and enable the removal from the engine bay.
My guess here is that you forgot to disconnect the engine from the stabilizer at the back of the engine. It's nearly impossible to see with all the bits still on the engine.
