Default Gearshift lever removal

How do you remove the gearshift lever from the 4 speed manual transmission? Is it pinned in any way, or should it just unscrew?

Same with the knob- does it just screw off? I need to have the shaft re-chromed, and it doesn't seem to want to come off.

Don't want to force it unless I have to.

There is a nut on the bottom of the shaft, and the knob screws off, there should be a locking nut to undo on the knob first.

First 2 pics are the later gearbox, the last 2 are on early box, but the same applies to both except there is a split pin and castle nut on the early box and a locknut on the later box..
