Getting Back Into Classic Jags
Glyn
The chrome shop I am using does nothing but high-class restoration work for vehicles. They are not into shopping trolley and similar manufacturing processes
Re-chroming the MK2 door handles cost A$80 each. Most UK suppliers of new handles quote around UK 130 pounds which translates to around A$230.
But that is not all. The postage will cost another UK20 pounds or around A$35. That brings it to a total of A$265
So rechroming in this case makes a lot of sense, costing only 30% of the landed price of a new part.
As I previously said restoration is not cheap but there are ways to keep costs under control.
Cheers

You are lucky Bill. Sounds like a fine operation. If I want a good job & have to send the part from Cape Town to Peter in Johannesburg to achieve a decent job. Cape Town has no decent plating shops. I'm told that's about to change ~ we shall see. The present R soles here just flash chrome. Clueless! No copper, buff, copper stage. Thank heavens I'm finished with chroming. Only had to return 2 over riders for redo. Dirt in chrome. Not bad for a whole car inside & out. There is a shattering amount of chrome inside an S Type when you lay it all out.

There are a couple of chrome plating places in our area that I will not use under any circumstances. Awful workmanship, notorious for losing parts and rude to the customers who complain.
Years ago, I had a MK1 front bumper rechromed by one of these places and within 3 years the chrome started peeling off. There was no sign of any copper between the steel and the chrome even though copper had been specified and paid for.
Like yourself I don't anticipate any more chroming in the future, but you never know. There could be another pop-up project which will keep me in the shed and out of the pub.
cheers

Anyone try that spray-on chrome ?
There seems to be a bunch of different products.
Pot metal that's very pitted and unstable can be done with this after filling sanding and painting with their grey paint.

The McLaren F1 team played around with spray on Chrome & gave up. It is not convincing placed against the real thing never mind what they claim. They then went for the Silver look that Sikkens did for them & now Papaya.
But maybe it has it's place.
