Jaguar MK2 Prototype Photograph
Hi Everyone
I thoughtfellow MK2 enthusiasts may find the attached photograph of interest. It came into my possession very recently andappears to be a factory mock-up for the MK2, based on a MK1 bodyshell. The picture is of very high quality but bearsno indication of where or when it was taken, but I would think it was taken in1958 or early 1959, as the MK2 production started in late 1959.
The first thingof note is the unusual chrome bar, joining the indicator with the foglights. The fog lights themselves are bolted(as per MK1) onto the valance behind thebumper (MK2 fogs were fixed frombehind) The MK1 had dummy grilles fittedin that position, with the fogs fitted further outwards (you can just make outthe original mounting hole near the left hand side of picture).
Also, if youlook carefully, you can just make out the position of the MK1sidelight/indicator, together with the hole for the wiring on the vehiclesnearside, just above the MK2 indicator.
MK1 over-riderswere positioned more towards the centre of the car and you can clearly see theholes in the main bumper bar, the over-riders having been moved outwards.
They appear tohave utilised a MK1 grille (ie – no centre vane) and simply fixed a thickercentre bar, as the vanes nearest to same seem much closer to the bar than theMK2 product. Also at the top of thecentre bar, the chrome around the Jaguar badge seems much thicker and chunky asit nears the Jaguar mascot.
Finally(although probably difficult to see in a small picture) the sidelighttell-tales seem to be fitted the wrong way around – with the highest point atthe front.
