Koni Classic shock absorbers
Dear All,
My Mk2 has black Koni Classic shock absorbers fitted on the rear suspension. I can’t find clear information whether they are adjustable and how that is done. Can you help?

Fraser,
Thanks for your valuable time.

PS According to the Koni website, the black Classic is adjustable. Some help with The following points would really help
- How to objectively decide if adjustment is needed or would help improve?
- Is removal from the car needed for adjustment?
- How to adjust this specific type?

This is from memory as mine and their instructions are buried under a load of other spare parts. In theory, you set new ones on the softest setting as the adjustment is mainly to take up wear, but a lot of people prefer them a little stiffer (a fraction of a turn). I think most of the adjustment is on rebound which is where you want the damping most. The procedure is I think that listed in the link below for types 76, 80 ....

You have to take them off the car or at least detach the top end in order to do the compressing and twisting.
Koni Classics are good quality, but, for tuning purposes (i.e. if you're racing or want to search for the absolute optimum handling), they are a PIA compared with equivalent Spax or GAZ.
