Default Mk1 build

Hey, a friend of mine loves collecting jags and has decided to part with one of his mk1’s which I went to look at yesterday! And said I’ll collect it next week! So will add pics when it arrives on the recovery truck

Its a 1959 2.4 but currently only has the suspension on and doors boot and bonnet the rest of it is in his garage! What have I done lol it’s going to require many hours but the only welding by the looks of things is a couple of small holes in the front floor pans and below the fuel filler at the rear!
I’m more than capable of the welding so that’s no problem!

A couple of pics more to follow tomorrow when it arrives at the workshop

I’ve got the original 2.4 engine and box and 3.4 engine and box, all the wood, gauges as the guy had 4 mk1s he broke for spares

Looks pretty straight from the photos.
Even looks sound underneath the plaster-like body filler.

Car arrived today and it will go off to the soda blaster Thursday to have rear end around bumper, roof and window surrounds, and top of the wings done as we tried with 40 grit da’s and didn’t really touch it so it will be worth the money rather than spending hours and hours going over it with different grades
will be ready Friday afternoon to collect

Wow, going to follow this with interest. I'd like to see/hear more about your MK2 as well. I don't think I've seen you posting about that one. Perhaps you could start another thread with your story of that, I know there are lots on here that would enjoy it. Good luck!

thanks, I’ll try and get some words together on the mk2 as well, I’ll have to find some pics, now has wires, full retrimmed interior, fresh chrome inc bumpers

hopefully the body work will be done by end of June beginning of July on the mk1, suspension will be blasted and painted as I want to take it to Le Mans Classic next year as obviously cancelled next month

What’s people’s thoughts on wire wheels? I want something wider and obviously the mk1 axle is narrow, I’m thinking a 7 or 8 inch wire on the rear

Dropped it off at the blasters at 10.30 this morning




Had had a call at 5pm and it’s done, he said it’s remarkably solid, will collect it tomorrow so will get some more pics

I would fit a wider rear axle as many do. This car strung with racing style wires.

Front wings need repairs but will get to that a bit later

roof has come out really well as has the rear quarters, apart from the damage that needs repairing but I knew that already

having it soda blasted prob saved two weeks work so saved on labour costs

as you you can see hardly any rust, this is a mk2 bootlid from another car hence the repair section



Roof is nice and solid

Why have you only soda blasted the top? All the real rust is going to be under the car, along the sills, chassis rails, under the wheel arches, foot wells and floors! No good fixing a dent in the wing if there is rot under the car!
Just saying this was my S Type at the blasters and as said all the rot found was under the car. Every nut and bolt was taken off the car so the blasting would expose every flaw in the metal work.

Yes. My body was mounted on a spit & fully blasted inside & out/top & bottom. Then had Glasurit Porsche self healing primer blown into every nook & cranny after thorough cleaning & vacuuming. After complete interior & exterior respray, Tectyl was sprayed/injected into every cavity.

The shell is worse on top than it is underneath
I’ll get some pics of the underside soon

I think if you go to far with blasting you can get yourself in a whole heap of trouble and outweigh cost vs value

You say that but it always come back to bite you in the **** later down the line. Glyn knows the story of my car from the S Type forum. I had the car grit blasted as you can see from the last
photo. It had been worked on previously by a Jaguar specialist in Royston Herts. They had welded some repair panels in to the rear inner wheel arch and after blasting they looked OK. Five years down the line and I am having to rip out their repair panels and I am finding galloping rust hidden behind. These monkeys did not even cut out the old rust they just welded good metal over the bad. Always best to go that extra mile today than have to rip out all the good work you have done in five years to fix something you missed back then. Just the voice of experience talking here with hindsight.

I'm having the same thoughts about my MK2, I would like to have it blasted but I can't find anyone local to me who can get it in their facility because of the size and the guy who did my last one has gone. I personally would have it all done or none of it done and then do it all by hand with paint stripper, wire wheels, sand paper and rust converter as necessary.

I could do with a nice handly local soda blaster like the one pictured above but ideally someone nice and cheap!

"Nice and cheap" does not exist anymore. 2014 I had my S Type blasted and it cost me £250 from a company in Galmpton Devon called K Blasting. Very good, very efficient, very helpful. They allowed me to use there forklift to raise the car so I could remove the front and rear subframes as I turned up with a rolling chassis but I contacted them last year to blast a 1966 Ford Anglia I am rebuilding and their price has gone up to £650. Suffice to say I am reverting to paint stripper, wire wheels , sandpaper and rust remover. Although cheaper it is a longer process to blasting but I just can't justify the cost at £650.

I would be more than happy to pay £650 for the MK2 shell or even a bit more, the best price I have had so far is over 2K! The last one I had done in 2013 was £600 including the doors boot and bonnet but this was fully scraped of all underseal before blasting to make it easier.

If prices had doubled I wouldn't have minded as I thought £600 was too cheap even back in 2013 but 2K is just too much for me by the time I add in the cost of transport there and back.
