Default Mk2 1968 240 Dynamo grinding noise!

Help! The Dynamo on my 1968 Mk2 240 is making an intermittent, loud, grinding noise (it still works). Has anyone got any ideas what this can be? and, how do I find out the exact type of Dynamo I have got fitted to my car without removing the unit first? Lastly can anyone recommend any Dynamo repairers/overhaul people in the UK (I live in the South London area). Many thanks for any help.

Sounds like the bearings are shot. You can get rebuilt units on an exchange basis, but there is this supplier in Walthamstow

DYNAMO REPAIR KITS AND PARTS DYNAMO PARTS : LUCAS C40 DYNAMO REPAIR PARTS

Also check the drive that connects the power steering pump at the back of the generator. The rubber mounts inside the coupler fail and make lots of noise.
This assumes that you have power steering of course.

Many thanks for both your advice. Fraser Mitchell, I will phone the shop in Walthamstow tomorrow. I will have to check to see what type of dynamo my Jag has fitted. Thanks again.
