Default MK2 Center console differences?

Are the MK2 center consoles significantly different on cars fitted with automatic and manual transmissions? I purchased a set of metal radio console side trim panels that I was told were taken off a MK2, but they are 2-3 inches too tall.

Thanks.

I think I solved the puzzle. There are two different sets of parts numbers for the side panels depending on chassis number. The later ones appear to be shorter.

The auto transmission tunnel is wider than the manual gearbox one. So the console side panels are shorter on an auto transmission Mk2.

It seems like it would be a manufacturing nightmare to have different tunnel widths depending on transmission. I'm assuming the tunnel is part of the monocoque body shell.

Yes it is. Certainly the Daimler 2.5 litre saloon that used the Mark 2 shell had a different tunnel which was much smaller as the engine was a small V8 hence the gearbox sat further forward hence less space was needed for it in the tunnel.

Default centre console

I have a jaguar auto model. The console(Containing the gear shift, for manual, and ashtray) is the same for both manual and auto. Turn the auto version upside down and you will see that the auto version has the cut out for the shift. I have both in my possesion, that part is the same.
I also have the cheeks, or side panels for the radio panel, these also appear to be the same. The bottom of these side panels come down to meet the bottom of the gear shift part.
Bearing in mind what I have said then the general( But perhaps not ALL)dimensions re the tunnel and console are similar.
The daimler version has a different tunnel and configuration.

I think there must have been a change in the design of the tunnel around 1962. The parts book definitely shows two different sets of numbers for the side panels (cheeks) depending on chassis number.

Interesting, and important if you're looking for used replacements.

Barry -As a reference point what's your chassis number and the vertical length of the left side panel?

Thanks.

These pictures show the differences between a manual gearbox console (from Nigel Thorley "Original Jaguar Mk1/Mk2") and mine (which uses the original console recovered). My car (The tan interior) is a 1960 3.8 with a DG 250 auto transmission. Note also that the whole console looks different and is not as high on the auto transmission since it seats on the wider tunnel required by the DG 250. The tunnels have also a different shape.

The configuration in your car is the same as in my car.

So, does anyone know where I can get a set of these?

Thanks.

It looks like SNG Baratt has specific panels for early and late automatic Mk2, but they are not available for on-line order. Give them a call: 1-800 452 4787.

Default mk2 console

First 3 digits are 205, its a 1961 DG auto. Height of side panel is 9 3/4".
The shape is similar to the Tan , bottom in line with centre console.
