Default Newbie...dragged home a '67 Daimler 250 V8

I had seen this car briefly at the Vancouver, BC (VanDusen) ABFM. It appeared to be complete, original, and rust free. I followed up with some email exchanges with the owner over the last couple of weeks and went to examine it today...with a car carrier and cash "just in case"

It turned out to be all I thought it was and more. The little V8 purred like a kitten. No rust whatsoever. Everything was there. I drove it on the trailer and cleared customs back into the US from Canada easily.

It still needs a lot of love. I want to go through the brakes, drive it some to determine if it needs anything else mechanically, clean it up, then decide if I want to do a full blown cosmetic restoration on it or just maintain it as an "original".

Oh, I did drive it some tonight (couldn't resist). It really scoots with the 4 speed OD and that little V8. Far better than I would have expected out of 2.5 liters. I believe it must be geared relatively low since the OD can compensate on the highway.

Here's a few pictures...

That's a real gem. Guess you'll be watching Inspector Morse on PBS from now on

DOHC V8 in 1967? Way ahead of its time.

Coil on the firewall, no computer, real gauges, all rubber hoses and real hose clamps ... sigh.

Bet you showing up with a car carrier completely undercut your bargaining power

Thanks, Plums.

The little V8 is actually just a hemi head. Single cam and pushrods. Iron block and aluminum heads.

Daimler V8

It made more HP than the Jag 2.4, however, and weighed a lot less which resulted in a better handling car.

Only 700 of the 17,620 Daimler 2.5/250 V8 Sedans had the 4 speed OD which makes it relatively rare and a much more appealing car to me.

I'll be checking back in with lots of questions I'm sure.

Cleaned it up a little...

I've been driving it some. The OD works great!

The brakes feel like the servo is not working. What's the best way to test the servo?

Thanks,
-Dick-

Is there one? My '69 V8 was strictly manual brakes.

Yes...there is one. It's located on the right front fender apron. Just behind the radiator.

It is not usually the servo that fails, but the reservac tank inside the front of the front wing. For a US/Canada car, I would expect this on the left side, UK cars it's on the right.

The reservac tank can rust and thus no vacuum is available, or the little valve that screws into it with two vac lines on it can corrode away as it is made of Mazak. The reservac tank holder is the culprit as it forms a lovely dirt trap at the top so a nice little 'poultice' of salt and grit builds up. Cure is a new reservac tank and valve.

I am, of course, assuming the brake system is identical to the Mark 2s

Thanks, Fraser.

I believe the brakes are identical to a Mark 2. The only differences I see are the engine, the split bench seat in place of individual seats, and some trim.

Mine is RHD (delivered new in Glasgow, Scotland) and the reserve tank is on the right front between the radiator and the servo.

Mine is remarkably rust free, but I will check the reserve tank as a first step in trouble shooting.

Thanks for the tip!

This is an old thread, but I am the new owner of this car, and I have the following update:
  1. The brake servo gave up the ghost this fall. It got us through a cross-country trip before doing so, though, so I can't really complain.
  2. While installing the newly rebuilt servo (thank you, Power Brake Exhange!), I found a hole in the Reservac tank.
In other words, the correct answer was: "C - All of the above". Thank you for playing!

While I am here, does anyone have a good photo of the Reservac installation so I can set it back as it ought to be? I see from the SNG Barrat Catalog that there is the tank, the check valve, and the stone guard, plus a support rod. Most of that looks obvious, but I am unclear about the support rod, which seems to be NLA. This car's old tank was mounted horizontally using angle iron and metric bolts, so what was there before is of little help.

Any help is appreciated,

Tom

PS: I forgot to mention that the brakes are much better now, far less "wooden" feeling. My Eezibleed "worked a treat", and the whole process when surprisingly easily, especially once I realized that the servo is easily accessed from the RH front wheel well. A great design on Jaguar's part.

Tom,
Check my website for a good photo.
Air Conditioning ? Valve Chatter
The link will take you to the air conditioning post. Scroll down a fair amount and you will see the servo cowl, the reserved tank and the little mounting arm. Click the photo to see a larger image. Let me know if you need something more.

Thanks for the links, Lin, that's one heck of a project! I only wish I had the resourcefulnees and skill to pull something like that off (I actually need to do something similar to re-mount the dealer-installed A/C system in my MGB GT - The standard install left a lot to be desired, such as big holes in the firewall).

I attached the photo you mentioned for the benefit of the archives, and here's the relevant text, too:

"I then mounted the Reservac vacuum tank. It mounts to the body with two 5/16″-24 x 3/4″ hex bolts, flat and shake proof washers and nuts. A small brace arm connects the vacuum tank to the cowl for additional support."

I can't really see the support rod, but I presume it crosses between a bolt hole on the tank shield and one of the bolt holes on the servo cowl?

Thanks again for the great pointer.

Tom

Anyone know when this system was first installed on the MK2s? My 60 model does not seem to have it, but the 67 does.
