Default Power steering fluid

Hi all,

Can anyone advise what type of brand/fluid I should use in my car (1964 Mk II 3.4 auto) which is fitted with the later 420 model Adwest P/S system?

The manual mentions Castrol TQ or BP Type A, neither of which seem to be on the market these days.

Any advice appreciated.

Pete

you can use any power steering fluid you find at any auto parts store. Locally in the US there are so many brands on the shelves it is mind boggling. I use Prestone with Anti-Leak additives and it still leaks !

also you can use transmission fluid.

For a stock car is probably is not critical what type but for a high performance situation and/or if high temperatures are a concern in the engine bay, etc. then I highly recommend Redline Power Steering fluid. I had issues with heat that caused the stock power steering brand fluids to vaporize and cause squeaking and fluid to foam or vaporize and leak out of the reservoir. I upgraded to the Redline fluid along with a power steering fluid cooler and the problems have been solved.

I use Castrol Transmax TQ95 transmission fluid. I stopped using any anti-leak as it clogged the filter in the fluid reservoir.

I'm using Dextron 3 transmission fluid (it's red)
I rebuilt my power steering box and pump when I first got the car, it leaked like sieve.
It was so worn that my machine shop had to make new bushings in places _ put it all back together with new "O" rings and it doesn't even leak _ not even a little.

Many thanks guys for those useful tips.

I suppose if it does not leak, that will be a huge bonus.

Red Line Synthetic Oil - Power Steering and Misc. - Power Steering Fluid

Since the power steering really does not require that much fluid I would get the Redline as you are talking about $12 dollars per quart versus 4-6 for conventional power steering. The key advantage is that this is a special synthetic type that is able to take much higher temperatures, not vaporize or breakdown due to heat, prevents boil over, is equally good at cold temperatures where you can get fade, and prevents squealing and leaks. Once a standard fluid boils over then it will continue to get worse and you will need to replace all the fluid. All the other brands and I also used the Dextron 3 as well boiled over then were useless, whereas the Redline has never once had an issue. My car has a high horsepower V8 and the engine bay used to get super hot and now it is still a little warmer than a stock engine bay and never did the Redline fail. Thus for such a small expense more I would go with the Redline.
