Crouch was the only one that disliked the S Type & should have been censured for his remarks regarding it. His beloved 420 is not exactly fetching stellar prices.

The way the rear S-type fenders cover a portion of the wheel and tire is what looks cool and with my custom wheels it is one part of the car that people often comment that it looks so cool with the larger wider wheel/tire with that body design. There is no improvement on ability to fit wider wheels by modifying the back design and it to me makes the car not look that clean and nice. That is one of the cool aspects of what makes an S-type a cool car, the rear arch, the beautiful wood, the IRS, and compared to a MKII I feel the rear shape of the car looks more balanced.

The rear end of that wagon makes me think of the Chrysler Scarab.

Primaz I think it depends on several factors to which size tyres you can fit. As you said with the original tyres and offset you can not go beyond a 205 especially with wire wheels as the wheel has to come out in a straight line parallel to the ground over the splines. This means the top of the tyre contacts the back of the arch before it has cleared the splines. Same with the five studs but not to the same degree as once you have pulled the wheel an inch off the studs you can lay back the top of the tyre to slide it under the arch. On the other hand if you change the studs for wheel bolts then you would have a lot more room to drop the wheel vertically once the last bolt is removed and have plenty of space for a wider tyre. Combine this with a different offset and that is possibly why you can fit you 245 tyres on.
I have told the story before but I bought a second hand set of Jaguar stainless steel wire wheels for my car and when they arrived I found they were off an E Type not an S Type. 6.5j instead of 5.5j. Got the wheel and tyre on bu deflating the tyre but when it came to taking them off I had to remove the bottom bolts on all four shock absorbers to drop the suspension down low enough o pull the wheels off the splines. Now sat on 205s with 5.5js and not having a problem

Yes correct Primaz. The condition only occurs with wires because you have to pull them off the splines horizontally & hub protrusion.

All becomes easier with wide tyres if you convert to bolt on wheels.

Snap Glyn.

Primaz, lower profile tyres will help a lot. The original 185 R 15 tyre had a side wall of 80 so a tyre rubber depth of 145mm . If you are running 245 with a 40 side wall you only have 98mm depth of tread to squeeze under the arch. A lot easier.

One of Primaz' secrets in his own words "I got my bodyshop to pull the fenders just a hair"

What a cheat and he didn't mention that along with his "I have 245 wide tires on all four corner and there is no issues removing the wheels fully inflated". lol. We should have realised that though as nothing is really standard on Primaz's Hotrod. Maybe the glass and wood trim?

Some gentle, almost unnoticeable easing of the rear and front wing profiles looks good on all the compact saloons. It shouldn't go too far and requires some judicious cutting of the wheel well and boot floor at the rear.

I do not think me trying to pull the fender made any real difference. I measured and I could fit one size up and go with a 255 but I wanted to keep them all the same so I can rotate them to get the most out of the tires since I drive the car so much.

Do your hubs have studs or have you converted them to bolt ons?

Makes sense & is even easier on clearance.
