Default Rear pinion seal ...

I'm considering purchasing a 1974 Panther J72 which I believe uses a Mk II rear axle. It has a rear pinion seal leak.

I'm guessing the original was leather? Is it difficult to replace the seal? Any special tools needed?

Ken

If you go here and download the service manual for the Mark 2.

Go to page H.18 and refer to figure Fig.19 _ looks like you need tool SL.4

I've never replaced a pinion oil seal before, but I suspect it's like any other.

The trick is to fit the new seal squarely into the axle, and that's what the tool is going to do. It appears to use the pinion castellated nut to seat the seal. You could probably come up with some sort of home made tool to do the job.

This is assuming that your Panther is the same axle, but and axle is an axle, they're pretty much all the same when it comes to the pinion seal.

You can replace the seals (behind the metallic oils seal with leather insert is a paper gasket) without any special tools. You just neeed a puller for the pinion flange and a big wrench nut to put the new seal back in place.
Ensure that you let te seal suck some oil first before you put it in place. You can see that on my blog in the 3rd picture Restaurierung eines 1960er Jaguar MK II 3.8

Oliver
