I would try rotating the switch to try and make the reverse lights come on before declaring the switch dead.
not to say they never fail but they rarely fail.
I believe this switch might be used in other Borg Warner transmissions like the BW65 and BW66 all the way to 1987 in the XJ-6.
SNG Barrat should have replacements.
I have a complete center console shifter assembly from A 1977 XJ-6 and it looks to have a somewhat similar switch. So surely you can find a new one if needed.
Before asking all your neighbours over to help out, raise the car on a ramp or jack with an axle stand for safety then get under the car with a multimeter. Check with the ignition key in the on position that you have power going to the green wire terminal.. If you have then put the car in reverse and see if you have power coming out on the Green Brown wire terminal. If you have power coming out it is not the switch but possibly a break in the green brown going to the back of the car. If there is no power going in on the green wire then you have a problem on the live side. The multimeter is your best friend before you start trying to pull the switch out or having a Jaguar S type appreciation society meeting to check if the rear lights come on. The multimeter will also have a continuity tester which is another superb tool you can use for chasing dead wires.

In the UK with the Covid restrictions we would not be allowed to do that. 6 People only meeting up any one time and not in a house or garden. No mention of your garage so you might just get away with having 6 in your garage.lol.
Cass, provided you are an organised gathering (have performed a prior risk assessment) & someone brings a football, in England you're classified as an organised sport & allowed more than 6 people. I'd happily host in Somerset. It's currently for sale on UK Ebay (4.2 Mk2, Coombs Replica), but if someone brought along a welder & we had a welding party ..... 🤣🤣🤣.
those were the days before a pandemic. We used to have Tech Meets. Bring your Jag problems, the experts will fix them while-you-watch. No charge for repairs. The meets became so popular they had to suspend them.

I have both the MK-2 and S type Service Manuals in .pdf format.
the adjustment steps are in the Electrical Section.
the adjustments are Left-to-Right first,
AND not documented is a FRONT-to-REAR secondary adjustment which is the one that turns ON the reverse lights. In other words, the switch pivots West-East, and then NORTH-SOUTH. You'll have to figure it out.
If it is under the dash panel I can only assume you have a DG250 Auto Box in your car as the BW35 inhibitor/reversing lights switch is definitely on the side of the box. Although strange things did happen when building Jaguars during the BMC and Leyland years with all the strikes that were going on. Parts were at a premium and some cars were made up of the parts lying around.
A new switch should get you up and running again and they are not expensive. In fact less expensive than holding a beer/car fixing party in your garage.

Hmm ~ another thing the scribes of books might have wrong. The "Detroit Gears" 250 was not supposed to be fitted to 340's. Must be one of those crossover cars like 1963/64 built S Types. As you say probably worse in the BMC/BL days.
