Default Steering Column Bushings

I've read several posts concerning replacing the steering column bushings but have some questions. I understand to remove the bolt from the coupler in the engine bay. What I don't get is what does the band/hose clamp in the car at the firewall have to do with the inner being pulled out? It appears the outer column slides into a piece which sticks through the firewall. It would seem once the coupler bolt was removed the inner shaft would pull out? Picture of what I have to work with.

From what I remember the clip (22) has to be removed to release the inner column from it's outer housing. We rebuilt the column a long time ago. Horn kit plastic bushes & all.

I'm guessing that's the clip above the hose clamp. If so how does it come off?

You retract clip 22 and the inner column pulls out IIRC. Let me check the service manual. Do you have a set of manuals? Service & Parts?

From Service Manual:

If my memory serves me correct once you have disconnected the coupler in the engine bay and the "U" bolts under the dash the column is ready to pull out but you also have to undue the four bolts holding the ring on the bulkhead (29 and 30 in the diagram). From your photo you should find the heads of the four bolts under the sound proofing behind the brake pedal. Once this ring is free the whole column can be pulled from the car and dismantled on the bench as per Glyns instruction.

See above straight out of the Service Manual. I've changed the diagram to one including legend. All above from Service Manual. Date 1972

It's a worthwhile investment in paperback form due to the data it contains & chassis number changes from one part to another. I could not work without a Parts Manual. Have 3 of them & an avalanche of spares from Barratts being regularly couriered, but I was doing a complete restoration. The most paged & consulted manual in my collection.

Here we are working entirely from the Service Manual. All the data & pics in this thread are from the Service Manual. But I don't know how to do major work on these cars without a Parts Manual.

I'll bet Cass has a well thumbed Parts Manual.

When I first bought my project my friend bought me an S Type parts manual for my birthday. Undeniably the most used and important book I had. Most of my S Type had already been stripped as it was a part restored project. I used the parts manual like am instruction book from Lego. It was not just a source of part numbers if something was missing or broken but an instruction manual on how all the parts fitted together. If you don't have one, get one.

You can view an online copy of all the late saloons part manuals at this site which is where I compare part numbers between models to see if a Mk2 or 420 part might fit the S type. https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...le-information
The Adobe flash player is no longer supported but you can view all the manuals in the html version. If it is difficult to read I save a copy to my desk top and then view it as a photo which allows me to increase the size so you can read the part numbers better.

I also have three workshop manuals. One well fingered copy in the garage, one in the boot of the car with the tool box and a pristine copy for shows.

I have a pristine & new Leather bound Service Manual in my collection that I found at Foyles in London.

I wish I could find it's leather bound partner which I understand existed. Both a very short run.

I've gotten the entire column out and have fitted new bushings. Greased them before trying to install the inner column. Problem is the plastic keepers just above the horn contact keep coming loose when I try to slide the inner into the upper bushing. I realize it's going to be a tight fit but it seems the horn contact will hardly go through itself. Attached is a photo. As always thanks.
