Dear All,
Few weeks ago the Mk2 started beeping whenever I turned the wheel. There does seem to be play in the column & you can waggle the wheel up & down a few mm which sets the horn off, so assume felt bushes have worn. Have a Haynes manual, but pics & description of how to remove column to access bushes is really poor. Could anyone offer a quick how-to idiots guide?
Many Thanks, & stay safe.
undo the universal joint cross-bolt at the engine compartment, spray lubricating oil like WD40. The inner steering column is splined at the u joint end, and enters the U joint, (I don't know the name of that joint) so you might have to spread apart the cross bolt "ears" to release the splined inner column. Car must be parked level with front wheels straight ahead. I would also make marks with white paint so the splined shaft goes back in exactly the same place iit was.
then go inside the car and pull the inner steering column complete with steering wheel. That's all.
there are now vinyl bushings to replace the "horse hair" bushes, one at the top, one at the bottom of the outer column. They have notches or "protruding buttons" that snap into the outer column. Lubricate the inside surface of the new bushings and the surface of the inner column where it meets the bushings with grease or the bushings will squeak.
There is also a pink wire inside the steering column that can get chewed up and cause the same symptoms.
The wire fails from many years of adjusting the steering wheel.
Found self with few hours spare this evening so gave it a crack, and ...
To even get to the steering UV joint by the bulkhead I had to remove the twin carbs - Done.
Released UV joint & noted lower spline on inner column (which sits in top UV joint) has been ground flat on one side into a "D" cross section!!! Interesting - definately NOT wear - a deliberate machined flat.
Couldn't pull inner column out.
So ... Loosened 2 jubilee clips near pedals, still no joy.
Have now removed steering wheel & released outer column & MAY be in business, but tomorrow will need to disconnect indicator wires to fully free outer & inner columns .... all because the horn went beep.
Should have just disconnected the bl**dy thing.
🤣🤣🤣
the splined shaft is shaped into a D so the pinch bolt can go through the whatcha call it? to the nut side. That is why you need to mark at two spots where it is before pulling it.

So ... after removing carbs, undid the universal sliding joint at bottom of steering column, but inner column refused to budge. Ended up removing outer column from car (with inner column still inside), got it onto bench & found a horse-shoe clip (hidden under a jubilee clip) coming in from outer column which stopped inner column sliding out. Stripped it all down & both top & bottom bushes in many pieces, all held together by grease & dirt. Inner pink horn wire also had tear in outer sheath. New bushes & replacement wire later ... works a treat! (Also took opportunity to put connector terminal on the steering column wires so next time I have to disconnect them can just use the block).
Carbs back on, & started first time (although sounding a wee bit gruff).
Now I've had a good look at the carbs on the bench to see how they work (hadn't noticed screw underneath to adjust needle height before) , today's job will be to tune the carbs properly.
- Also found perished hose-end at rear of engine (runs into heater matrix) & white corrosion on adjacent manifold! I'd assumed a core-plug was seeping as engine does leak a wee bit of water after shut-down / when standing, but may be another easy fix. Definately starting to find my way around this engine 👍.
