Default Suspension Question

Does anyone know a source for rear leaf spring repair? I don’t want to just go out and buy everything new for this car. I’d like to fix and or restore what I can.

As you can see she’s sitting low and the tires are rubbing.

Tell you what that colour could really grow on me. Love it. Not a car that you could lose in a car park.

When I lived in Houston, I had the impression that half the population owned a truck and most of the trucks had live axles on cart springs. There must be a lot of spring specialists who can reset or make new leaf springs. I'd ask at the local Dodge or GM truck shops.

You might want to indicate at least the State in which you are located in your profile. The US is a big place and I doubt anyone from this forum is going to ****** your MK-2 (especially in its current color). I know a great spring fabricator in the SF Bay area, but I have no if they are proximate to your location...

What size tyres are fitted to that car before you start chasing springs. They should be 185 X 15"

Also worth checking that the front mounting on the spring is in good condition (its tucked above a metal plate) and that no one has put spaces between the metal plate and the body which is a fairly crude way to lower one of these.

The other thing to check is to lift out the rear seat base and check that the spring mountings aren't showing signs of rot/collapse (hopefully not though as that tends to be really rotten UK cars that do that).

Default Jaguar Mk2 Stance.

This is about the correct stance for a Jaguar Mk2.

I don’t hate the color. I intend to repaint in the original color after I get it running correctly. Fix the suspension and sort out the electrical gremlins.

Your pictures are taken from higher up which distorts actual ride height. i.e. in your pics you can see more roof.

Im not worried about theft, it’s up on blocks with front and rear suspension removed. Where we live it rather quiet too.
Thanks for the heads up on my profile. I signed up on this page when I knew I was getting the Jaguar. I didn’t bother with the details at that time.

I have the tires and suspension stored at where I work, part time. I’ll have a look tomorrow, when I go to work. I never thought of the tire size, good idea. The spare tire is too big for the well it sits in in the trunk. You may be on to something. However in the photograph the car sits very low in the rear. Also all the bushings were destroyed!

A second vote for what Homer wrote about the front spring support. The whole spring hanger arrangement is a terrible mud trap and rusts away everywhere. The middle support can partially collapse, especially the one on the left side of the car - without all the Panhard rod bracketry, it's weaker than the one on the right.

In modern tyre speak the standard tyre fitted to these cars is a 185 X 15 which is an approx 79/80 profile ~ source Michelin Technical Director.

Many people fit oversize tyres to these cars with the most common size being a 205/70/15. If your car is shod with these & there is a bit of play in the rear suspension it might be the cause of your rubbing.

I’ve removed the suspension both front and rear. This car has been in LA since new and is incredibly clean. It’s just totally worn out. The floor is solid as well.

It may well be a combination of factors. The fact that the spare wheel won't fit in the spare wheel well would suggest that larger than standard tyres have been fitted.

I noticed that. Also the tires were hitting. So maybe I’ll replace all the bushings when I reinstall the rear axle and see how she sits. I don’t mind saving money on new springs. Thanks. BTW your car is beautiful.

I have had 12 MK1 and MK2 cars.
Be wary of resetting the springs.
In my experience most sagging rear ends on MK1 and MK2 cars comes down to the spring mounting rubbers having decayed especially the front rubber which mounts to the body
Homers suggestion to check the body mounts is spot on. I have had to repair a couple (and they were on the left side.)
Do replace the bushes in the torque arm assembly. they are critical to keeping the rear axle under control. I have seen them so clapped out that the rear of the diff is rubbing on the body.

I removed the rear axle, the bushings, everyone of them were worn to s#$&! Tonight I ordered everything except the leaf springs. I’ll put it all together and see how she sits! Now on to the front suspension!

Hi Farina43537,
If you need rebuilt springs you could call these people,
https://www.eatondetroitspring.com
(313) 963-3839
I have never used them but I have been told they can make/rebuild any type of spring.
