There are or should be rubber spacers between the individual leaves of the spring. They wear away with time. They contribute a little to the ride height. I replaced some with pieces cut out of rubber sheet.

Life would be simpler with two extra trailing arms arms and some coils (to cheer Rob on a grey day).
