Default Threads on Front Brake Hose

Hi, I am coming over from the XJS Forum, I have an '89. I also have a 1963 Avanti with Dunlop front disc brakes. I was told Moss Motors front calipers for a Mark I or II would fit the Avanti. They sure look the same. My question is about the threads for the brake hoses. Does anyone know if they are metric or standard? For example, my hard brake line is 3/16 standard. I think there is a pitch and number associated with the fitting also?

The callipers on the MK2 don't have the flexi hose connected directly to them but have a hard line connection from the calliper to the flexi hose, the thread on this is 3/8 UNF and the pipe as you mentioend above is 3/16".

Depending on your car (not sure what an Avanti is but will have a google shortly :-)), there are a few other callipers you could consider, the rear callipers off an XJ6 (series 1-3 I think) and also the 60's Stype and 420 bolt straight onto a MK2 and you just have to use the MK2 handbrake callipers (if your car has them)., the early 60's S-Type front calliper also fit and there are some callipers from a Volvo (240 with solid discs I think but do check) that can be fitted to a MK2 but the brake discs have to be reduced in diameter for these and the calliper mounting holes increased from 12mm to 1/2". The advantage of these alternatives is that the seal sits in the calliper and the piston slides on it like modern callipers whereas the original MK2 ones have the seal on the piston and this slides on the calliper cylinder bore and once worn out or corroded these need to be sleeved. Just a few options to consider. Beware that 420 front callipers (and I think later 60's S-Types) have a different spacing that won't bolt straight on to a MK2 and hence probably won't fit your car.

Best of luck :-)

Homer, That's quite a comprehensive answer. Thank you.

And the original Avanti was a Studebaker model for 1963, and later, a stand-alone marque.
