As I progress with my early MK2 engine rebuild, more questions seem to crop up. I purchased all new timing chain tensioners and while the lower chain tensioner is identified as "hydraulic", it is actually just spring loaded with no port to the oil passage in the block. I am reluctant to install it since I can't find any information to indicate that this tensioner superseded the original tensioner. I hope someone can clarify this issue for me before I make a mistake.

 

It is hydraulic.
The spring is locked into place, and when tension is applied the locking mechanism disengages and the spring takes over, but the actual tension is or should be hydraulic.

So it would appear that the early ones were not hydraulic.

XK's list a hydraulic one and refers to it as "later".

 

Thanks very much for the response. The hole is so small I didn't see it. I can now proceed with the assembly.

 

Looks like yours is hydraulic after all.
I know the hole is tiny.

 

FYI just in case, the newer tensioners don't lock back as per the manual, and release when you push them in after installing the chain etc.

 

The hole where the oil supply comes from the main oil gallery isn't all that small as it has to take the small conical oil filter: -

Of course the hole in the tensioner itself is small, why I don't know.
