Default 2000 XJ8 --Gear box failure

Looking for some guidance from my fellow Jag lovers'.

I have a 2000 XJ8 with 90k miles. Idling, while in gear surged intermitently without giving gas and when ready to go forward (drive)gear wouldn't engage. It would just rev. Then a gearbox failure light came on the dash. Reverse works though! As we managed to park it. No leaks noted.

My mechanic tells me that I have to replace or have the trany rebuilt.
4-6k. Ouuchhh. I'm in denial, 'cause I havent had any symptomitic slippage in the past. We did smell a burning scent right after the incident.

Looking for some clarity...Help. please.

Joe,

Did your mechanic find any other codes for engine performance? A bad coil pack or other misfire can put the gearbox into 'limp-home' mode. This was the case with a friend's S-Type 3.0 Litre that was misfiring. Her mechanic said the Ford gearbox needed replacement when in fact I found two of the coil packs were shorted by oil leaking from the cam cover 'o-rings'. When the coil packs were replaced and the codes cleared, the vehicle performed normally.
