Hey Hook, in reply to your questions

There is a time / post count requirement to fulfil before anyone can access all the features of the site. Please belive me this is for everyones benefit and due to the level of spam we have previously experienced.
I will, in your instance, manually upgrade your membership

As for the email received - We have literally thousands of dormant members who may view the forum over extended periods of time but never ever contribute. Although we obviously encourage people to visit the site and view the benefits, after a certain period of time, you either wish to become a member or don't.
We therefore try and encourage people to take up active memberships and receive the benefits of the forum as well as contribute, even if they have nothing technical to add at present.

I hope this clarifies this for you

Default Jim...can you help me too?

As much as I am enjoying this site, the fact that I cannot use the full extent of the site makes it hard for me to continue to use it. There are several people who I want to PM and several threads with pictures I would like to view. I realize that you have to set up walls to prevent spam, but I hope you can tell that I am not spam. Can you atleast tell me what I need to do to become fully "forum-worthy"? Like post count or time frame? Thanks

JimC64,
I understand you arguments and appreciate the pains of dealing with unwanted spammers but a newbie like me would have nothing to posts. You can’t comment on things for which you know nothing. I join forums like these to gain knowledge and typically a good place to start is XK8 & XKR FAQ quick links. But there are attachments which are not accessible because of the requirements established, I assume. I would like to view these attachments if possible. Regardless of my access, I feel very empower after reading about some of the issues of the XK8 & XKR. The site provides great insight and information of possible defects and remedies for things like the secondary chain tensioner, JagtechOhio comments on how to ID AJV8 Nikasil engine and blowby testing. Thanks for any consideration.

Thumbs up What ever it takes to keep the spam out, I'm in favor!

It's a great site and even though I can't view and do all yet, it's going to be worth the wait, I am sure of it. Thanks Jim for the clarification

Maybe then this sight should charge like other forums to access material that has been done by members who have contributed to the forum. Why does a newbie feels that they don't need to pay their dues to get to the next level.I think we have too many of the "Me Generation"that whine when that can't have something and will not work for it. Too many people have given time to make this a great forum with out charging for premium levels, all you have to do is participate and contribute..What do other think?

Eagle, I second your comments in general as you make some very valid points, but we will not charge for the info supplied freely by members.
I try my best to keep abreast of new members and where possible manually upgrade them, but, only when I can be as sure as possible that they are genuine!
We've had way too many problems with spammers / links to dodgy sites etc etc and I will NOT expose any members to that if at all possible.

As you so eloquently said...."participate and contribute"....thats all we ask

I agree, its hard to give advice if you don't have the knowledge. I have a 2002 XK8 and I use this site to learn. I hope I don't need to go to the dealership for service and repairs, hopefully with knowledge from this site I won't. I am capable and the people on the this forum have alot of info. To all that help us I say thanks.

We do have a very nice off topic forum for people waiting on the introductory period that have nothing technical to contribute.

Thanks K Westra

There's no real reason NOT to get involved on the site and get your post count up to a decent level to be "safe"
Anyone with a post count of 10 or less who is inactive is at risk of being removed at some point, once past this stage everyone is a member for as long as they wish to be.
As for being able to contribute in a technical manner and answering questions related to issues with the vehicles!!
I'm sure I know of at least a few hundred members with very little technical ability ( myself included...lol ) who have a post count of hundreds, maybe more through such posting activites as outlined below.

You can, as you say, post into the off topic section, where there are threads such as
"Mug shots" "word association" "5 word story" "around the world" and of course "girls on cars" and "girls on Jags" amongst others.
Don't forget the regional section.....Always a good place to drop into to see who's near you, and of course the "new members section" where you can always welcome other newbies such as yourself.

Between these alone, its very easy to get up to a post count of 10 or above and start to become an integral part of the site, whilst also working towards achieving your priveleges.....

Anyhowover....

Maybe you didn't do well in class participation in school, but on the forum we don't grade you.
A teacher once said that everyone has something to say,but some are too lazy to get it out.
As an example on getting started, first go to the new members section and tell us about your car, what kind is it,how long have you had it.
In the section that cover your car you can share a problem and see if others have had the same and what they did about.
Put some energy into it and don't sit on the sidelines, jump on in,it can be fun.
I think you really have something to add to this forum, thanks for stopping by,the garage is always open.
