Question expansion tank explosion

Hi, new kid on the block. Had 8 point buck wrap around the left front of
my 2000 xj8. Found used 99 for parts, cranks & runs good. Want to get it
in shape to try and sell the 99 to repair the 2000. Problems---After replacing the thermostat housing and epoxy on the expansion tank. Purrs like a kitten.
Took it out for test drive and about 3 miles out the expansion tank exploded,
yes, exploded into about 25 parts. Any suggestions as to what happened and how to fix it??????????????

Welcome.

I'm not clear on your intentions - you bought a 99 to fix your 2000 car? Which car has the exploded tank?

Welcome to the forum,

You should go to the XJ tech section and ask there.
I'm assuming you decided to fix the 99 instead of canabalising it?

Welcome to the forum.

As per the above posts.

Could be any one or more of a number of reasons, but I'll hazard that it must have been cracked in the first place, for those same reasons to allow it to explode.

easy, buy a new or used expansion tank as I'm pretty sure the epoxy wasn't intended for what you asked of it

if you're skipping out on quality to make a buck (pun intended) good luck on both vehicles future

Thanks for all your replies. I have decided not to try and repair the 99 but to use it for what i bought it for, use it for parts. Body parts are what I need and they all fit the 2000. Repairing the junker seemed to be over my head. So after using the left front fender, hood, bumper, grill, and head lights. I still have 3/4 of 1999 xj8. Maybe some one can use the other parts. Thanks again for your comments. H2
