Probably too much information, but I wrote this the other day to exlain how I got my first, and only, Jaguar.
I wanted an e-type since first sight in 1962, but as a 16
year old couldn't afford one. When I was leaving for
Vietnam in 1969, I told my wife that if I made it back, we
were going to buy a Jaguar. I did make it back and shortly
after, we started looking for the right one...the one we
could afford
We looked at many cars and it came down to a
choice from two we had seen. One was a flat floor, OBL,
that I liked but my wife said it needed too much work, was
incomfortable and with me going to school and working full
time too, I wouldn't have time to work on it. We ''needed''
something that we could drive. The car we bought was
beautiful, with a recent re-spray, new Michelin tires, 19,00
miles and the owner was obviously proud of it. We bought
the '64 FHC for $2500 which seemed like a lot. I taught my
wife how to drive a stick shift in it and it became known as
Grumpy. I have many great memories driving the car to Mid-
Ohio for the Trans-Am and Can-Am races, heading over to
Watkins Glen for the US Grand Prix and Can-Am and Trans-Am
races, hitting the 401 to Mosport for the Canadian Grand
Prix and Can-Am races. Each trip saw Grumpy filled with
camping gear, food and water and of course ''spares''.
In 1973 I started working at General Motors Research Labs
and drove Grumpy to work often. One night my wife and I
were headed out to dinner, I held the door open for her
(Southern gentleman in me) and when I got into the driver's
seat she said ''What woman have you had in hear?'' I was dumb
struck! On the silent way to the restaurant, it dawned on
me that a couple of days earlier, I had loaned the car to a
co-worker to take the department secretary to lunch. I had
to have him call my wife to explain
We were divorced in
1987.
I still have Grumpy. Last time he saw the open road was in
1976, but has been in the garage, started infrequently and
driven around the block, or properly stored. Now that I am
retired, it is time he went back on the prowl.
