Gorgeous new Jag - but w/questions

Just bought a pristine 96 XJS ragtop - spectacular - probably sat for a while - has only 34K miles. Had to remove the parking brake cable since it wouldn't release. But the Parking Brake light is still on - and so is the Check Engine light. The Jag dealer says drive the car and the Check Engine light will go out - but it hasn't. Anyone have any suggestions for an easy solution? We're reasonably mechanical but don't have a lot of time. Are we looking at an expensive dealer solution - or something simpler? Thx. for your advice - its a beauty and everything else seems to work just fine. PS - one small added area of expertise pls. - where is there a diagram to see how the spare tire is mounted in the trunk? Its laying down now with the oddest looking rod next to it. Thx. guys.
gotta be patient for those older model XJ owners to gather their thoughts and get back to you. there's a few of em running around here. Parking brake cable and check engine light don't seem to jive... not sure if there's other trouble causing that. Again, not a late 90s XJ anything, but be prepared for more questions before you can get all your answers. Good luck!
Welcome, I'm sure someone with experience will be along soon. Please let us / me know how it goes. I am very seriously looking to get rid of my mint 'ol Dodge and pick up a XJS ragtop as a project. It's that or a 3 series rag. Always loved them both.
The parking brake handle is between the seats or on the LH side of the driver's seat?
The spare tire should stand up right and go up against the rear of the back seat. I can check on the 96 to make sure. That's a little newer than I'm accustomed to. (My God! My car knowledge is stuck in the same time frame as Duran Duran!!!!) Let me know.
