I am new to this forum and this is my first post.
I am owner of a 2006 XJ8 CPO which I brought July last year. I brought the car for the love of it and was always bothered whether it will make it through the snowy MI months as a daily driver.
The car came with new ContriPro Contact All Weather tires on std 18'' rims. The tires were okay till we hit first snow storms and they showed very little grip on 1-2'' snow/ice accumulations. For the early snow storms, I soldiered on with my all weather tires usually below 25 mph relying on momentum/traction control.
Finally decided not to take any more chances and changed All Seasons to 215-55R-18 Hankook I-Pikes. I could not believe the transformation and was able to make thru 4'' of snow without any issue. I know that I-Pikes are not the best winter tires, but they are the very good from wear/performance point of view. Also, since the tires don't have extreme grip/performance on snow, they allow drifts during cornering on snow with very good control.
My car with snow tires feels almost competent and controllable in moderate snow w.r.t all seasons in dry condition.
This is my first RWD car and I am completely sold on modern day RWD layout with TC and decent snow tires.
One major myth about FWD/RWD in snow is finally put to rest

I used to spend a lot of time just south of there in Warren. For a couple years my job took me every month to TACOM (Tank - Automotive Command) for meetings. My In-Laws lived in Warren as well for many years, so lots of time spent in your area.

Yeah, the UP is a harsh place in winter. We'd get about 300" of lake-effect snow yearly. Some students once put up this sign:

 

The sign is hilarious, though not fair to Canadians beyond up north :-)
Its so funny that all of natures best resources water, wood, minerals are in such a hard climate
