Welcome.

Its been a loooooooong time, but I seem to remember on my S Type 3.4 that there was a panel on the side of the trans tunnel to access the nuts on that "hoop" bolt arrangement, and then the starter "fell" out the bottom??????.

OR,

Did I have the oil filter off, and slid the starter forward and out, really don't remember 100%.

The members in the MK2 etc section will know.

Welcome to the forum Stanley,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

Here's the relevant section from the MKII Workshop Manual:

MKI / MKII forum and this one https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj40-xj81-25/ to the XJ40 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top of each is a good place to start for information on regular issues.
