Hi New Here. 1997 XJ Vanden Plas
Hello, just wanted to say hi. Dad just got this car and I drive it once in awhile so decided to join a jaguar forum to get more info about the car.
however i'm still confused on which car i have since there are x300 x305 and others. jaguar has 4.0 liter engine.

Welcome aboard, Virgilson! 1997 VdP would be an X300, LWB (long wheel base) meaning if you've outgrown your dad by bunches, like a couple of my son's already have..there should be plenty of room for you in the back seat! Perhaps not what you wanted to hear.....
Take a look in the X300 section and you will find lots of info about it. Widely regarded as one of the most reliable models Jag ever produced. Even so, as near as makes no difference a 15 yr old car, now, so inevitably, a few things may pop up. Engines are mostly bulletproof and quite torquey. Won't start? Crank position sensor, fuel pump? Could be other causes but those are probably the first to eliminate in your troubleshooting. Headliner will sag, sunroof may have a few broken plastic pieces in its "gubbings." They have electrical grounds all over the place and can be finicky if they are not clean and tight all around. Wiring along the trunklid hinge can chafe and cause problems with trunk release, among others. Having mentioned most of the warts...let me tell you it is one of the smoothest, sweetest rides you shall ever sit astride! Enjoy!

Oops! SInce you didn't mention a supercharger, I assumed it doesn't have one....if so...that may be the X305? I can't remember...seems the V12 was X330 or something? But if normally aspirated 1997 4.0L..you are X300. If THAT curious...somewhere in the X300 section is a thread with a pdf that traces all the numbers down for you....good search homework...but you need to boost post count up to 10 to open the pdf...I think.....I let my son drive mine home when we went to pick it up at the seller's house..and barely got it back from him!!!
