I do not really want to scrap my Jag need help
Need advice with problem.
I have a Jaguar X type 2.2 diesel x400 1008, with a 107 kw rating. I have an ongoing issue that, if not solved, will result in going to the scrap yard, which I do not want to do, I love this car. Before Christmas, the engine would not start without many turns of the key and then eventually catch and go with stationary high revs until warmed up. RAC called out and the kind mechanic technician suggested glow plugs. Which I duly changed. did not fix the issue. Then it went to a garage where they had it for four weeks and did nothing. I then went to a decent garage. I had by this time purchased my computer and it came up with a fuel sensor fault on the fuel rail. This was the same fault the competent mechanic came up with so It was changed he also found that the alternator was putting out no voltage so this was changed.
The engine ran and then stopped running once had the original fault once again. IE would turn but not start. The mechanic came out and we looked at the engine only to watch a part melt on the Glow plug link lead harness. The part which melted was the black plastic part that the screw goes into at the end of the rail and the main voltage cable is soldered into. So this was changed. It did not solve the issue but needed replacing due to melting. He (the mechanic) then had a thought and asked me to place my thumb against the turbo actuator swing arm and push against it, whilst I did this he turned the key and pressed the accelerator and it fired up the first time and the engine ran perfectly. The second I took my thumb off it stopped the engine. As I have said I then replaced the harness on the glow plugs and I am asking whether or not my fellow Jaguar owners would replace this actuator. I have since done the same thing a week later with the wife behind the wheel and me pressing my thumb and it started and fired up and ran. I am only querying the purchase as it would appear that I must by the £130 version as I have the 107kw engine and only the company that sells this one is priced at £130 every other variant of this actuator is around £50 but not of those fit my vehicle variant.
So do I bite the bullet and purchase and hope that it's the actuator and not some other problem hiding behind the actuator? if I buy this actuator I will have spent over a thousand on this repair hence the scrap yard scenario. Any advice as to why a new actuator might rectify this would be appreciated. And what the actuator does in this scenario. Thank you in advance
