install i-pod in 2003 S type
many jags need an ipod accessory. I went with the one that connects to the radio antenna and you tune to a radio statiion and can use the factory radio controls... I ordered parts from Crutchfield. the unit is $50 + two adapter cables $20 each. no tax no shipping..$89 total.
here is how the install went;
I did not need to remove the ashtray. I did remove the center cover over the auto trans. I did need to at one point turn the key on and shift into neutral to remove the radio/climate control module. so did not disconnect the battery. I used a towel to cover the wood ashtray To remover the shifter wood cover just pry up with some care. mine popped out Tools were a 7mm socket with a screwdriver attachment for better access to 4 screws that hold the radio unit in the dash and a phillips/reg screw driver. a variety of screwdrivers helps to find an exact fit.
Ok first and main-issue removing the leather trim around the the radio/climate contro/ and shift consol. This will pull out with the help of a large screw driver. There are clips that hold tight. I started at the top because one area was not as tight and it helped to slowly pull it loose.
One issue is where the leather wrapped trim connects to the cup holder trim. Remove the plastic cup holder, remove the black plastic innerpiece...there in the corner is a small screw that holds it tight. remove the screw and you can lift the storage box/cup holder enough to get the leather trim out and back in. That screw took awhile to find.
Now that the trim is removed. This was the biggest job. Now just 2 screws ( on each end)hold the 4 way flasher trim. I did not disconnect the 2 wire harness just moved out of the way. Next 4 long 7 mm socket screws hold the unit. 2 at the bottom and 2 midway. Mine were gold colored. they came out easy...I was very careful not to drop them, but they are long enough to not be much of a problem. The unit pulls out and you can hold in your left hand or rest on top of the towel that protects the ashtray cover.
next disconnecct antenna. Lower right side corner of the radio ( passenger). only connection on that side. It is a clip on. you push down and pull it releases....Now read the instructions for installation carefully and go slow. It is easy but relax not to hurry. now you plug in one of the new cables to the radio and one of the new cables to the antenna you just pulled out. Take the 2" by 4" control unit and plug one end to radio cable and one end to the antenna cable. It will only go one way. Connect the wire harness clip. hook in i-pod cable that comes with unit...It also has a permanent mount piece that i am going to install in the ashtray.
All your connection are made, except a power wire. Connect that to the cigarette lighter very convenient or a lower amp connection if you like. there is also a ground wire to connect anywhere metal. Now figure out where you want everything to sit. The new unit will rest behind the ashtray, below the radio ( plenty of room)...push the radio/climate unit back in place adjusting the wire harness in place. turn on the radio..test the unit... or if brave just begin reassembly. 4 screws unit in place. 2 screws 4-way flasher trim in place. push pull turn twist the leather trim wrap cover is in place, drop down cup holder/storage box in place. put little screw back and other pieces in place...plug in i-pod.. about 2.5 hours
I could have saved an hour with this post information. Finally I did not think to connect to cig lighter. My power wire is going to go to fuse box passenger side. I did not test i-pod...bravey looks different if the unit doesn't work !! wordman
