Hey all,
I truly beleive that my 1998 Jaguar XJ8 VDP in Saphire Blue over Ivory "found" each other. She needed TLC, and attention, and I just needed her. Yep - every since my Dad's 1961 Mark IX in Ebony Green, I have lusted for, and dream of owning my own Jaguar. I happen to have a brother that is an affectionado(sic) as well, currently he had Four Jaguars - 3 XJS, and a 96 XJ12 - He sure loves those V12's (as do I, but not the thirst they display)
Anyway, I am in the shake-out phase, and so far so good. This Nikasil enine does not appear to burn oil - no smoke at all (have not done compression or blow-by tests as yet) - Got a tiny piece of service history from local Jag dealer - Throttle body replaced under recall - so I am probably ok with stallling issue. Is it TRUE that Jag Dealers only keep their own records? I was hoping I could get, even for a fee, a service history by VIN, but they said no.
Of immediate concern is the status of the tensioners, as I have no records to knowif they have ever been replaced. Should I pull a valve cover, and get a look at the secondary tensioners asap? It will definitely ease my mind knowin what they look like, and if they were replaced. What gaskets will I need on hand if I pull one of the covers? Obviously there's the valve cover gasket itself. Do I need the Spark Plug seals? Why are some single, and others are paired with a joining section, like a figure 8?
Lastly, can someone tell me what water pump is the "newer design"? - I have seen one listed as OES/OEM with the white (ceramic? plasic? impeller, and a LESS EXPENSIVE "Aftermarket" one with a gray "metal" looking impeller. At least the pictures show it that way. That's the issue with internet purchases. Can someone provide a "Brand" name or a specific link to the "improved design"?
Thats it for now... Pictures forthcoming, just beautiful. Once I have these items taken care of, I will really be a happy camper. Thanks to everyone for making this site rock!
