Default New To Forum With An XKR

Hi Guys,

Just purchased a 2002 XKR, 51XXX miles, silver exterior, black interior. I haven't had this much fun driving a car since my old BMW 6-Series that I owned before kids.

I have fleeting memories of a Jag my father owned in the early-mid 1960s when I was very young (crap, am I that old now?), and I was tempted many times by the XJS convertibles from the late 80s.

My GF and I drove from Memphis to Alabama last week to look at two that were for sale. The other was a 2003 with 67XXX miles. The 2002 was in such magnificent shape that I couldn't pass it up.

I have already dove into the XK8/XKR section with particular interest in the stereo threads. Thanks to all of you for maintaining such a great forum and resource for Jags.

Welcome, Hypoluxo. I think you picked the wrong Jag. Those O3's are priceless.

There have been several good threads in the XK8/XKR section. The biggest question for me is what to do with the mostly useless GPS. There have been several options mentioned in several stereo threads, and ideally I would like to keep the car appearing as stock as possible. But, the stereo in the XKR takes me back to 1990 in its approach and functionality. But, with the top down and that sweet engine, I can deal with a sub-par stereo for now.

The 03 was in good shape, too. I went down with the intention of driving that one home. But, it had a few minor issues:

1. Passenger side window did not properly retract when the door was opened and closed. After reading the threads here, it is possible that I could have corrected this by re-calibrating the window travel. Didn't know that at the time.

2. Several speakers busted. Yes, probably would replace them regardless, but this would have forced me into more immediate action and expense.

3. Road noise was too noticeable even though the tires had a good amount of tread left. It is likely that a tire replacement would have solved this, but again, there goes an immediate $1200 into the car.

I did like the extra hp from the '03 engine. It was just enough to be noticeable, and aside from these issues the car seemed to be well-cared for.

As the two cars were priced within a few dollars of each other, I went with lower miles and no immediate repairs required.

Thanks for the comments and the welcome.
