New Member: 2005 XK8 convertible front end vibration travails
I purchased my silver, very clean 2005 XK8 convertible with 70,000 miles on it a few weeks ago, and slowly but surely been working through
a wide variety of videos and written commentaries about the vibration issues. This cat comes with basic suspension, not adaptive, not air.
One successful move was to obtain a FM-Blue Tooth Dongle with USB power suppport; now I can use my cell phone/Pandora to drive the
stock Alpine audio system which works well enough.
The car came with new Continental tires with measured tread of 8.
Step 1 to try to reduce vibration and some mushiness over 30 MPH was to have them [life time] balanced. Inflating the front tires to 32 PSI,
and rear to 34 PSI both reduced the problem somewhat, but above 50MPH the vibration on level surface in reasonable condition is there,
and at 70MPH it can be noticeable. Going slightly downhill there is a sort of washboard vibration. I find that my 2022 XLE Avalon drives far
ore comfortably across the nearby interstate than the XK8 currently does, and my hope is that with some careful repair, the XK8 can do the same.
Step 2 was going to have it aligned, but one tire shop simply emailed back and commented that this was not likely going to make a difference.
The extensive Forum commentary on the XK8 vibration issues suggests that the front upper strut mounts are likely culprits, and that the only sensible,
permanent, reasonable cost solution is to either get the replacement, inner discs from Peter Hoburn or Steve David. Finding somebody to handle
this kind of solution is likely to be daunting, and I'm not ready to get into taking the front and rear suspensions apart.
In turn, I'm wondering if one can detect with reasonable certainty just what is causing the vibration issue. Is there a way, other than replacing the upper strut mounts,
the bushings in the various control arms, and the struts themselves to reach a sensible conclusion?
I see all kinds of Bilstein's for front and rear strut replacement, and wonder if the Bilstein 24-067263 is a reasonable front strut solution.
Any suggestions/recommendations would be much appreciated.
