New Member from CO
Hey All,
I am a new member here hoping to learn a lot about Jaguars. I currently own a 2000 Land Rover Discovery, and am hoping to upgrade to a 2001-3 XJR in the next month or two. I am aware of the quirky problems associated with owning a british car, and i have fallen in love with the design of the XJR. My Land Rover was originally bought for it's off road capability, and i planned to lift it, etc., however i have since realized that i don't have the time to do so, and would rather have a quick, fun car to drive as a daily driver. The Land Rover is abysmally slow, and handles terribly. I am interested in learning, and hopefully doing most of the maintenance myself, but i am not very experienced at this point, turning 18 in February.
I have spent some time working on classic VWs, have "restored" (fixed up to selling condition) my Land Rover, and would like to move to the Jaguar at this point. I will have to drive it in colorado winters, so i will get a set of good snow tires, but i don't think that will be much of a problem. Our truck does fine in the snow with winter tires in 2wd (rarely needing to switch into 4wd), and the XJR has much more weight over the rear wheels, whereas the truck was extremely light over the rear. I am selling the land rover, and my price range is 7-9k. I have found a few in my price range, and will be purchasing hopefully in a week or two, when i can get my Land Rover sold on eBay (they seem to be selling best there).
Thanks!

Thanks! i'm glad to see how active this forum is.
And i know my disco is full-time 4wd, but the xjr is not, so i was comparing it to our truck, which is only part-time 4wd. The disco is GREAT in snow...My plan, though, is to sell the disco asap (as i sense a few major repairs to come), and drive the truck through the winter until i find a good deal on an xjr.
And thanks for giving me FFA!
And this may not be the appropriate place to ask, but i have seen people freaking out about nikasil liners, as low sulfur gas was only required in the US in 2005-ish...so if i find a car that passes the blow-by test, and still has nikasil liners, will the fact that i am no longer running high sulfur gas mean that it won't get any worse? or has the damage already been done, and it will still fail eventually?

and yes, life is good, but this isnt a gift from "daddy." I do my research, i find good deals, and i have never taken a loan/large monetary gift from the bank of mom and dad. This is/will be my car, with my money, paid for (insurance and all) by me.
I learn everything i possibly can about a car before buying, make informed decisions, to get a good deal. i would much rather get an older, fast, luxury car, than a newer cheapo car, and i find the deals i need to and pick the car to make that possible.

Hi gwhiz, about your Nikasil concerns, you will find this to be a regular question, have a look in the various XJ8, XK older FAQs and forums you will see what I mean.
No direct experience myself, but I would think that if a car is running right today, no blowby etc. etc. then it should be OK.
Also a lot of the engines may well have been changed under warranty, now they may be a good find
