Hello to all,

I'm a new member from the island of Malta (before you go rushing to the Atlas, that's in the middle of the Mediterranean, south west of Sicily).

I bought my first Jaguar in July, last year. It's a 2004 X-Type 2.0 Diesel, SE. I'm a bit of a Mercedes fan really, but really happy with my Jag.

Traction control, cruise, leaper on hood...and some previous owner took the trouble of fixing front and rear mudflaps, which saved the car from much damage.

It's in a fairly good condition, covered about 140,000 miles, had an engine change at 75,000. I got its service history for the first 4 years (Stratstone Stourbridge, West Midlands UK). After that it spent some time in Wales (Cardiff area) and then another year or so in Exeter, Devon. MoT test results show no failures, so it kinda looks like it's been well taken care of (and it shows). I had it imported to Malta in July 2011.

Picture at the bottom.

No major problems so far, though I'm trying to catch some more of its later history,

Will look forward to "meet" other Jag owners and forum members, share some experiences and perhaps some tips (and ways to save money ).

Greetings to all.
John

Welcome to the forum John,
Great Intro.
The X-Type looks to be a very well cared for example at 140K miles.

We've had reports of difficulties with bureaucracy and costs for exporting/importing Jaguars in several countries. Be interesting to hear of your experience with importing the X-Type from UK to Malta.

Enjoy the forum.

Graham

Thanks Graham.

Yes, car's in good con., I'd never have thought of buying 2nd hand, but this was a good example, and I had always wanted to have a Jag at some time in my life.

Importing cars to Malta is not a huge issue, in fact, over 50% of new cars registered in Malta are 2nd hand imports. The initial registration fee has increased, but otherwise no major issues as long as the paperwork is in order. Most of the dealers are now catering for 2nd hand imports, there are some who specialise in this in fact, particularly Japan imports, like small cars, which now make more sense that ever!

I got mine imported via an agent friend of mine, as it came with other cars on a trailer and eventually much cheaper. I could not afford the time to drive it down, either. But quite a few decide to drive over from UK (but not from Japan, of course).

The respective Transport Authority has specialised sites for those interestign in importing cars:
Malta - Used Motor Vehicle Valuation
Registration tax has increased this year, so that's the major hurdle, really, otherwise no big deal in importing a car from UK to Malta.

All the best.

John

John,

That seems a simple, well documented and low cost procedure compared to some we've seen.

Japan exports are becoming more popular. Initially their market was Australia and New Zealand but they are now appearing in the Middle East. Malta is also therefore a logical target market.

You've avoided one of the issues with a Japan Jaguar by purchasing a UK one. The Japan VIN numbers are an undocumented range which makes parts and servicing more of a challenge!

Hi Graham,

Actually, I'd never have contemplated getting a Jaguar from anywhere but UK. In fact, we only get Japanese cars from Japan. Even these have sometimes funny issues - like the car radio whose range is outside that of Malta so you need to replace it or have it chipped to get the local stations. I know that cars for different markets may not be compatible...

Today I plan to go to the Jaguar dealer to have an oil leak checked and maybe book it in for repairs. Looks like the crank pulley seal's gone...which is strange - did not hear of many issues with that. For time being I'm avoiding small garages as I know that once it's at Jaguar, they have all the parts, knowhow and electronic diagnostic equipment. Small garages also do not always mean cheaper (at least in Malta...).

In July I took it for an A/C repair and it came back with a (small) dent which wasn't there before. Unfortunatley I picked the car after sunset so it was not possible to see on pickup.

Cheers,

John
