XJRs have a harsher suspension set up over S Types yet scores an awesome performance .I would go for the XJR w/o hesitation .

Both awesome cars. S-typeR has more software problems than XJR.
XJR may have timing chain problems in the future.

I would take the XJR just because I can do the chains for nothing. But man.....STR.......damn I am glad your making the decision.

the 2001 and up suggestion may not meet your "$15 K max" criterion. My 1998 xjr is about as good as a car can get for less than 10K. Nikasil and timing chain issues are certainly areas of concern - if you're lucky you can find one (98) that swapped the engine before Jaguar's 100K cutoff, or at least had a timing chain replacement.

either way, my suggestion is: XJR!!!!!!! -
