New member needs help making a decision
what's up everyone? my name is dick i am new here and i am currently in the market to buy a "new", used jaguar. i have narrowed my choice between an '03 s-type r or '01 xjr. while the stylings are different, i have a soft spot for the xjr styling because that is the style i have loved since i was a kid and the styling of the s-type has just recently grown on me. i can find more xjr's in my price range or lower ($15,000 max) but am seeing some s-type r's that are close. should i spring the extra ~$2k for the newer s-type r? do any of these have any particular issues i should be considering? any comments or advice will greatly be appreciated. thanks in advance!

Both awesome cars. S-typeR has more software problems than XJR.
XJR may have timing chain problems in the future.
I would take the XJR just because I can do the chains for nothing. But man.....STR.......damn I am glad your making the decision.

I think that I am leaning more towards the xjr. What years should I avoid and what type of problems should I expect to run into? I read that from '01 and up they were pretty much problem free. Is this true?

the 2001 and up suggestion may not meet your "$15 K max" criterion. My 1998 xjr is about as good as a car can get for less than 10K. Nikasil and timing chain issues are certainly areas of concern - if you're lucky you can find one (98) that swapped the engine before Jaguar's 100K cutoff, or at least had a timing chain replacement.
