I'm using the forums to gauge the maintenance issues (or lack of issues) on XJ8s (mostly post 2004s).

As background I live in NYS and I've owned a 2000 Lincoln LS with a manual transmission for 9 years. The car has served me well but it is getting old (has 140,000 miles now) and some kid just hit it and I need to replace some suspension parts. I'm toying with the idea of eventually replacing he LS with an XJ8. The main thing holding me back is the automatic transmission.

I've never owned a car with an automatic and the maintenance and repair scare me a little (I do all of my own work).

Anyways I'm learning a lot reading the postings and will let everyone know if and when I make a purchase.

Welcome to the forum. You will find plenty to look at on the X350 forum (XJ aluminium saloons from 2004-2009). Generally speaking, transmissions don't seem to figure much, although software reloads for the trans control module are failry common jobs, I have had two myself, costing very little. Transmission is made by the German ZF company. The air suspension system is currently getting lots of posts, but we dont get many on the UK Jaguar forum.

Welcome to the forum.

Nice to see you.

As Fraser says, Air springs seem to be nearing the end of their natural life.

Hey. Another NYer here with an LS. I have an 06 Sport and love it. Looking at maybe upgrading to an STR. You have a rare LS, very few manual cars around.

Auto transmissions is properly maintained will last a long time, but have internal clutches that will eventually wear out. From what I have heard the ZF unit is stout enough not to worry about it. Just know if you keep any auto trans car long enough it will need to be rebuilt. Just like having to change the clutch on a manual.

Just a follow up after 5 years of reading posts and nursing the Lincoln along (now very rusty and with 195K miles). I purchased a used 2004 XJ8 with 60K miles. CarFax shows a 2 owners, accident free vehicle that has been regularly serviced at a local Jaguar dealer. The transmission fluid and filter were changed at 50K miles. I pick it up the car on Thursday. Paid $7700 out the door.

Welcome to the forum pragmatic,

I'd only been on the forum for a month when you posted your Intro so as a newbie I didn't reply then.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Enjoy the XJ8.
