Hi Graham,
I have been searching through the forums, I need the SDD(full package with laptop, etc). I couldn't find a link as to which is the most trusted source here. Thank you for your help. I have searched on Fleabay and found the latest V163 versions, however to price differences are confusing.
Hi Graham,

SDD was designed to run with a 'live' connection to JLR servers through TOPIx which is the subscription portal for dealers but available to anyone who wishes to register and pay. All offline versions of SDD are 'cracked' (a.k.a. pirated) and therefore unofficial. This is the main reason for the big differences in cost.
If you are looking for a 'cracked' version to run with a Mongoose Pro clone interface cable, they generally originate in the Far East although some UK sellers on ebay offer the same products. Main concern is the potential for virus or malware within the installation software but if you intend to use a dedicated laptop just for SDD, this isn't really a worry. I use version 1.50 because it was the last complete package released by JLR. Subsequent versions required the VDF (Vehicle Definition Files) to be downloaded from JLR which requires subscription. I've never been comfortable with the way software pirates have obtained and bundled these.
Any version is adequate and safe for diagnostics but if you want to reprogam modules, something around v1.34 era and an external power supply are essential. I wouldn't consider doing that with a clone but some members have done it and proved successful. Others have had a different result!
